Nothing too new here, except I found this nice temp compensated 1% current shunt at Digikey for $10 (part number CS3FR001). This is a 4-wire kelvin connected shunt. I have used a calibrated piece of copper wire as a shunt for years, and it works OK, but this just gives me some peace of mind that I'm getting the right numbers.
I have also added a voltage measuring wire and a resistor to the circuit configured so I can measure voltage by switching the meter from the 200mV scale to the 10mA scale; no additional switches are required.
I don't have a whatmeter I don't plan to get one. I figure that a good DVM is a basic requirement, and a current shunt is an easy add-on. And I much prefer the short connections between battery and ESC.
