Someone in the Airplanes - Electric - Foamies asked if anyone had tried a boat design in fan fold foam. You can view the thread here....
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=267427
I had built an airboat about 20 years ago and thought building a foam boat would be fun. I also own an old Jetstream and figured that is the hull shape I was looking at. One of the guys in the planes forum sent me plans for this boat....
Length: 25 inches
Current Weight: 4 oz
Build time: 4 hours over 3 days (not counting drying time)
Additional Weight needed to balance in the water is right at 10 oz. So total weight with out electronics but with ballast is 14 oz. I may glass this one at some point. I will power this with a small EDF since I have no inboard motors. Should prove fun. :D
I can post build pics if anyone is interested.

That size of boat would need a 700 motor and 12 cells (or 35+ amp capable LiPo equivalent) and something like an X445 prop to do it justice. Forget the ballast and go for c of g about 28% from the transom. I think you'll be disappointed with edf as there's very little thrust at 0 mph.

Thanks for the recommendation martin richards. I will look into that setup and see if I can afford it :)
The edf was simply because I have it. May even toss a brushless pusher on it since I also have that.

I just couldn't help myself. I have been having so much fun with the fff that I decided I needed to build something other than a plane.
Here are some of the build photos. You will notice I went heavy with the probond..

Supporting the e-zone advertisers;) http://www.offshoreelectrics.com (it also has a v. good advice section for setting up).
The cf props are a lot cheaper and ready to use, btw. Another point: the purists might not like the rounded edges of the chines (Bottom/side joins), especially near the rear of the hull. Epoxy/microballoons will improve performance.

deeman...
Thanks! Your the one that started this I'll have you know! Now my mind is racing with boats and planes :D
I am waiting on a few parts that should allow me just enough stuff to get this on the water. In addition I am going to start one out of the bluecor fff. Since bluecor is easier to work with it should be easier to get this type of boat together. Have not decided for sure if I will glass this one or not. I still have more sanding to do to get my lines sharper.
Will post some of the bluecor build once I start it.

How did you get the dimensions for the boat? I have all the drive gear for a boat but no hull to put it in!!!

Don't forget that a smart top deck, cabin/cockpit makes the boat look good. Plastic soft drink bottles are a good source of canopies. Electric boats are generally made watertight and the deck sealed with removable waterproof tape. If you want belt and braces (suspenders?) safety, you can install a separate water-tight radio box for Rx, rudder servo, esc and radio batteries if used. With the recommended setup, sooner or later, the boat will flip
Glassing may not be necessary but I'd reinforce the motor mount and prop shaft areas and make sure the cells are firmly anchored.

the foam is rough even when sanded .. a iron on film like econocote works wonders on flying boat hulls.. an uncovered hull on my planes is to draggy to allow me to get anough speed to come up off the water

Vyceroy...
Ever just seal with a few coats of WBPU, sand between coats and then paint? This one is water tight with just the foam. But I want to seal it for sure. Lots of sanding to do first. Then some filler to smooth it all out.
Martin...
I am going to add some details here down the road. Windshield and the like should look good. Plans call for one I might make one out of the bluecore.
Spadinator...
Got the plans from Vyceroy. Basicly it is an unwrapped 3d model from Turbocad.

I dont mind at all! post as many plans as you want! I personally want plans for one like the Miss Budweiser Hydroplane. That would be fun to build out of foam. Here is a link to see what I mean...
