Hi there,

I am new to sailing but have been driving and flying for years.

My local yacht club races Wheeler and Solings,

Though Wheeler class looks great, the initial $$ is too much for my 1st boat.

The Soling 1M fits the bill.

Who out here has this and might be able to lend a helping hand?

I have picked the HS625mg for the rudder, What would be the better sail winch servo? does it need to travel past 60deg?.

Thanx in advance

Wow. This sailing section has really taken off the last month or so...

Anyways,

Are you looking to race it, or just casually sail it?

For racing, you want a medium speed winch, with lots of torque.

Any sail winch or high load servo will work, In a pinch for fun sailing, you can actually sail with set mainsheet, no winch.

But...... I am trying to rememebr what was the minimum amount of torque and degrees needed. Will try and rememebr tonight :)

Beautiful boat- I love the paint jobs many people have put on them. Anyone got any photos laying around?

My club was one of the first to race the Soling and while it is not the fastest best sailing boat around it was unbeatable as an introductory boat. Price was right, assembly relatively easy and it made a lot of beginners very happy.
Good choice to let yourself get hooked. :D

That servo is overkill for a rudder servo. Just use a cheap standard servo. Check the Victor Model Products: Soling 1M (http://www.victor-model.com/soling1m.html) website for radio recommendations (the people who manufacture the kit). And check the Soling One Meter Resource Center (http://www.amya.org/s1m/) for links to good information.

well I received the kit today.

Nice. I feel spoiled having put together some of the best laser cut aircraft kits as these parts need work, Every part a little work. (oops! broke a nail...lol).

I have quite a few extra JR 537s around I guess I'll save another 39$ and try one of them instead of the 625mg (lighter too)

As for the sail winch I still haven't bought one yet.

Glad I bought a kit to make it MY boat.

Victor Models recommends a Hitec 715 Sail "Winch" servo. It is not really a winch, it is the same style as a standard arm servo. It has 160 oz of torgue. Any servo with as much or more torque will do. Eventhough the HS-715 is discontinued it can still be found for $38.

The amount of rotation, 60 deg or more, can be compensated for with how far out the attachment points on the sail arm are.

Pacoson, It's been a while since I've built my Soling but one mistake that I made when I built my Soling is that I let the keel get too hot after I poured the resin and the keel melted. I don't know what the instructions say now. But I've since heard that you're supposed to keep the keel immersed in water to keep it cool, when you pour the resin.

Oh well, I ended up building a winged American Cup style keel for my Soling and still had an awesome time sailing the boat. :)
