What are you building? Is it a flying wing or the wing of a regular airplane? Is it powered or a glider?

Surely you can apply sticky tape directly on foam. On polystyrene foams it works without any special preparations. But if you use EPP or EPE foams you should first use some sprayable glue to make the tape adhere better. But be careful about the type of glue you use because most glues destroy the foam.

After covering the wing with tape use an electric iron or a hot air gun to shrink the tape a little. This works with most sticky tapes and will result in strong, stiff wings.

Cutting holes into a wing to save weight is something unsatisfactory. I tried it but a wing with holes needs to be completely covered by tape - and tape ist quite heavy so you won't save any weight compared to a wing that has no holes but therefor is only partial covered by tape. Only if you anyway want to cover it completely it makes sense.

Don't forget to use the credit card as a "squeegy"sp? to stick the tape down really good before applying heat.
