Fred is on Hiatus. If you can pick up an Addiction or Compulsion you won't be disappointed.

I'm sure you will. I got a Compulsion earlier in the year, and - wow. I have had an absolute ball with it. It's been a great learning plane.

one question though. How come he didn't do live hinges? Not that the hinge tape isn't the best, but over time I think it will come off from flight with all the sun on top of it. I might be wrong. I was thinking of doing Silicone hinging so that I won't have to mess wit the tape.

Good question, I'd imagine live hinges take more effort and are tough to mass produce.

Just my $.02.

I also hate tape, interested to hear how silicone works..

naw you just lay glass or kevlar on the hingline.. after the wing is cured, you just scuff it to take the epoxy off and u have live hinging.

Silicone hinging works great. Easy to do, but you gotta wait 24 hours for it to cure..

Tape is a pain in the backside but it is easy to repair or replace.

True! I heard the silicone hinging will last longer than your plane. I'm gonna go that route if the tape hinging doesn't fit my style. With silicone hinging, you don't even see what's holding the ailerons/flaps on unless you really look at it. Of course it's clear. With tape, you got that clear tape look on the wings and I think it just look odd..

Addiction/Compulsion owners:

I would like to know what throws you guys are using for thermal cambering and flap/elevator settings. I guess in percentage. I'd like to get a basic number of percent for the throws and start out with that. I dont want to end up with a uncontrollable plane if it wasnt set right. Don't want to stall out from bubbling up with too much flap and such..

Thanks,
-Tomi

Unfortunately, I can't really say what mine is set at. Someone set it up for me and it seems fine.

Flew it today on a 2 meter highstart. Took it up nice and slow. I had about over 150' of altitude to fly in. For some reason, I have to give it left trim on the ailerons to keep it flying straight. If I keep the control surfaces straight, it turns right. So I'm flying it with trim correction and you can see it. could it be the wing pins not lined up right? Also, the left aileron has a bit of twist in it. If I level one side with the flap's TE, the other side sits up about 1/8th of an inch. That might be the problem why it's turning right. I'll have to trim it more.

Then later I took it to a slope and flew it in 3-5mph winds. Flys great. Now I need a real Histart to get this thing going higher so I can catch some thermals.

I was out flying my Compulsion today too, but I have some bad news.

It was out in the distance a bit. It banked, and suddenly the wings looked just like the clouds behind them, to the extent that it just disappeared from my view. :(

I tried to do anything to get it to flash the bottom side of the wing, but to no avail. Finally, after 15-20 seconds, I put on my flaps and started hunting. Somewhere north/northeast of our field lies a Compulsion with my name in it.

What a bummer of a day.

is it okay? I wish I could catch a thermal with mine. I have no access to a larger histart or winch. I like to fly alone, I guess I'll have to put some investment into a unlimited histart.

I also can't figure out if I'm in a thermal or not. The plane is massive. I fly my Timon 2m from Art Hobby and when it hits a thermal, it jumps around like it's in a turbulence. I circle the plane it it goes up. This Addiction is way different. But it's alot of fun to fly.

I don't know if it's okay. It vanished from the sky. It's got to be out there somewhere. :(

I got the NSP 2nd-from-largest high-start. It works like a charm. When I stretch it out somewhat diagonally across our field, I get a heck of a launch - as good as a winch launch.

Not that I'll be using it anytime soon, now. :(

Oh I thought you found it. I hope you find it man. or someone does and hopefully that someone will return it.

I saw the histart from NSP. Their shipping is kinda wacked though. I wanted to order the carbon Sparrow 66" and they wanted to charge $40 for regular shipping. Buddy of mine called a week later and they wanted $50+. Anyway, the reason to say this, How much did you pay for shipping for yours if you remember. I might get one cuz it comes with that reel and the flourscent line. I've seen it in action and I want one!

Hmm. I can't remember for sure, but I think it was around $95 shipped.

Airplanes are often times a lot more expensive to ship than accessories. Give 'em a call on Monday morning and see how much it'd be to ship one to you.

tomi

Airplanes are more expensive. I ordered a 2 meter plane that is 1 peice and the shipping was 40 bucks in a 80" box.

I'll prolly just place an order on it without figureing the shipping cost. It shouldn't be much anyway.

You got pictures of your plane? I'm thinking or getting that flashy tape to put on the LE of the wing. The white on top kinda disappears in the clouds, to me, even when flying close.

Hanagar

No, actually - no pictures. I just got it in June, and never thought about taking any. :(

A day late, a dollar short.

I think i'm going to paint the fuse on mine. I'm gonna just paint from the nose cone to the TE. The tail surfaces are all brownish color and it matches the fuse. So I'll leave it like that. i'd like for the fuse to match the white top wings though. Probably will put some sort of color on the tips with some trim sheets. The bottom I love the carbon so i'll leave it as that..

tomi

Strapped my P-50 Sony Digicam on the top of the fuse. Mid size camera but the plane flew like it wasn't even on there. I only took videos. I don't have an extra channel to put a servo to push the button on the camera. So the video does bring down the quality. I might try using the autoshooter mode. 10 seconds until it shoots a photo, but chasing down the histart is a pain! It will get me waaaayyyyy better quality photos anyway. I will try next time. this is cool

Anyway, here is some photos.

Bah...we got plenty of winches here...Tomi just needs to make it out to the field!

Hey...what happened to you today? I thought we were working on the SGII today?

its not this sunday, its next. Remember! Every other sunday. coulda done it today. I didn't go to work. We're moving back to san angelo so shanna can go to school. But I'll visit. It'll be a few weeks though until I move.

Anyway, took it out to murch today to fly it off of some slope lift. A few buddies wanted to see it in action so they all landed their planes so I can fly. I flew and it was great. Winds were blowing like 6-8mph on the hill. Very light wind and it stayed up like nothing. Well, a kid decided to throw his combat wing out and I didnt know. I was flying on the left and didn't see him on the right. well he hit my left wing panel and put a dent in it. small dent. I'll figure out how to fix that later. But it striped one of the aileron servos which will be a piece of cake to replace. Crack in the fuse, hit it with CA. I tried to bend it and all but it won't move where the crack is. I think it was just from impact from the ground. I was about 6 feet off the ground. nosed in. Right side wing rod pushed forward about 1/4 of an inch through the fuse. bent the fiberglass that was pushed forward back and epoxied it back. Hopefull that will hold. Other than that, it's all good. Just some small dings and small crack which wont' hurt anything.

Hope to fly it again.

Dan Ahearn: Yeah If I could make it out to the field here I would fly it off a winch.

Tomi...it's not a sloper man! It's a TD machine! It won't take slope abuse! So why are you moving back to San Angelo? You know there are like 6 colleges here!

Jared

tomi
Aug 23, 2004, 07:06 PM
It did take the abuse. I see them TD guys who come in and slam the nose into the ground. Mine was similar but I didnt have enough tape to hold the wings on.

Anyway, moving to san angelo because the college's here won't transfer credits over. We tried to get her into NIT and their grants are a joke.

going to murch...laterz

Hanager: did you ever find the plane yet? or someone? I finally flew my Addiction off of a winch today with a little help from one of the club members there. He launched it off for me while I flew it off the winch. I tell ya, comin off a winch is fast. I get about 200-300 more feet of hieght off of a winch. But the Pinnacle Highstart from NSP works just fine. Anyway, The 3rd launch was a really good one and I caught 3 small thermals and pretty much stayed up pretty high but close distance in view. 4rth Thermal I caught was huge. Even some Turkey Buzzards were thermaling with me. Of course they were higher, I did get about as high as they did. Never seen my 3 meter plane so small. Out of those 4 thermal flights, I got a good 30-35 minute flight. Coulda gone longer but I got thirsty, lol! Dove down, and it was haulin butt! Then the cold front wind kicked in and forced us to go home. It was great. Can't wait to do it another time!

I only wish that I'd found my airplane. It seems to be gone, unfortunately. :(

Isn't it great? Fred Sage's planes fly so well...

I only got my Compulsion this year (mid-June, actually). I remember that I didn't have it more than about two weeks when I had over an hour flight, off a high-start. It was simply amazing!

I miss that airplane. :( It sounds like you're getting a good taste of your Addiction - it lives up to its name, doesn't it? :)
