View Full Version : Attaching a chute to a hi-start

I just got a Dynaflite hi-start chute in the mail. The 12" chute comes with all eight shroud lines dangling, not even tied to each other! What is the best way to attach this to my hi-start line? The shroud lines are about two feet long - do I use all of it, or trim to a shorter length?

Then there are two 6" lines coming off the top of the chute. The ring goes here - any suggestions as to the best way, kind of knot, etc.?

The chute goes between the tow ring and the end of the tow line.
The tension in the towline keeps the chute collapsed on the way up.
Lots of knottage to connect everything.
from the plane (this using a streamer for marking the end of the line), and from the ground with the chute....

The last chutes I got (from Skybench) are simply tied. Take all eight of the lines and form a couple inch loop on the end and just tie a single overhand knot and cinch it tight. Photo attached below. On the top do the same thing, but make sure the loop you wind up with is big enough to pass over the ring so you can easily attach it by passing the loop through the ring and back over it. Take a look at the pics. If you don't understand it, I'll try some more photos - one step at a time. I use a large snap to attach the line to the chute.

Use all of the line, don't shorten them.

Good photos above. Perhaps soem of the text and photos in this article would be helpful.

It's that "lots of knottage" part that I want to get right. I've used streamers up til now, but getting tired of chasing the towline all the way to the stake on light wind days.

Thanks for the helpful pic and explanation. The chute I got looks about like your pic, except in my case they only passed two of the lines through to the top, not all eight.

I guess what I was most interested in was the kind of knot that works best for tying multiple lines to a ring or swivel. I was thinking of fancy half-blood knots or uni-knots, but if simple overhand knots do the job for you, I'll try them first.

My chute came already set up that way. I figure Ray Hayes has been doing this for a long time. I am pretty sure the one I got from Holliday was set up exactly the same way.

I am really surprised that they only brought 2 lines through to attach the ring, but I don't see why the same technique won't do fine.
