I was wondering if anyone knew any good links that show free plans for constucting a wing for a combat plane?
Thanks,
Rob

http://www.teamseaholm.com/instructions/in972/in972.htm These are the instructions for the avenger which is an excellent design that has won many contests. I have 3 wings that have been mid-aired, and dirtnapped hard several times. Wings and fuses are still in good shape. In general, using 40 or 60 psi foam and fiberglass rods works great. If you need even more strength, use ripstop nylon or ripstop polyester to cover the wings instead of packing tape. I have non-avenger wings using the same construction method that have gone through several fuselages and the wings are still doing great. I cover all of my wings with ripstop nylon.

You might also want to go the North Texas Combat site http://www.texascombat.com/ and click on the Workshop link. There is a detailed how-to build a Smack wing.

Thanks David the kits shown on that site are nice!! If I'm not mistaken the best class for a beginner to start out in is the open class?

I think SSC would be the class to get started

I would have to agree on SSC. You might also consider what people are flying near you though. Check out http://www.rccombat.com/rcca.asp for rules and airframe limits. This is the Radio Control Combat Association website which has tons of information about RC combat.

After receiving so much pressure from other combat pilots, it seems likely Jim G and I will start kitting the McGrizz Smack Bat in the very near future.
The kit will consist of the bat ready to attach the firewall and tail feathers, firewall, motor mount, tailfeathers, wing core with incidence shim, fiberglass spars and ailerons. The kit will cost somewhere in the $40 to $50 range.
The 1st pic was taken at the Dixie Nats. The 2nd at the Hilltop Hot 'Lanta SSC meet.

I really like that last pic. You just can't go wrong with the red and black on a combat plane. It gives it some very nice lines.

Wow, both of those wings are really well engineered and must be quite durable.
The thing is...
Constructing those wings is fairly elaborate and requires both time and emotional investment. It seems to me that a full day of hard combat might require several wings. If I was flying combat with those wings I might flinch when I should be going for the kill if I only had one wing with me.
Now I know this will sound crazy and wimpy, but I like the 1,100 mm Firebird XL/Fighterbird wing for combat. They are very sturdy, cost only $10-$15 each and are fully prebuilt and ready to go out of the package. I like to have several on hand so I can instantly replace a damaged wing and rejoin the fray.
Since the plane is small and stiff with the heavy electric gear on center, larger and heavier planes just deflect me in to a tumble without damage. If I can manage to dive in to a large plane at high speed - being a heavy plane with its prop folded and a rigid boom - I can actually do decent puncture damage since the more massive plane holds its ground while I do my business.
Overall though, the big gas planes can eat me for lunch, but I can get my licks in for a lot less money and time invested.

P.S. I just figured out that those wings are for streamer combat, not my cup of tea. In that case they both are very strong and the effort required to build them is justifiable for 'ladies combat'.
