Great heli lazy-b. You've inspired yet another to do scale.

Thanks for the pics, and keep them coming. My inspiration needs them!

Thanks,

Superman217: Nice Video, I love the way you fly it at the football field.

Raytor: Nice, Scale Body, are you a Filipino? I have a friend here in the Philippines, also flies a Corona with the brushless motor.

I also have a video of my Bell 222, just don't know where to upload it, its in MPEG format.

Guys: if you have video of your Bell 222, pls post it here also....Thanks.

Here my Bell 222 when I first got it in 1994.....During those days its one of the most popular color scheme, even those pattern plane they use these color scheme.....its an old photo, I just scanned.

The Bell 222 helicopter looks cool. I have seen them before, but never at the RC field I fly at. I rarely see scale helicopters. They are really cool. :D :)

Kalt Baron 60 EX mechanics, Kalt 222 fuselage, nav lights.
c. 1991, still going! Colour scheme from Kalt brochure.
Graupner aerial/doorhandle/screenwiper pack.
Do you like my helipad? Plywood folding, it's quite a small target to land on!
I've never been able to taxi, you need so much revs it lifts the back legs off. Running landings are OK though.
Cheers
Chris

Appendix details:
-One mechanical retract servo with pushrods/bellcranks going everywhere/can be landed with retracts up as I found accidentally.
-Paint is 2-pot Acrylic Enamel (Dulux Acran aka "2K"). This paint can be sanded with 1000~2000grit and cut with Brasso (coz everyone makes spray stuff-ups or mosquitos land on it). Check if your paint can be cut first!
-Masking tape Scotch 3M "Fine Line Tape". Masking is most of the troubles.
-Scale helicopters are relatively heavy. After Pod & Boom, and one heavy landing with my 222, I learned real quick to take it easy on ground proximity!

Phad: Nice Bell 222......you just give me a good idea of making a HELIPAD, its so nice to take a video of landing a Bell 222 on a HELIPAD.....your Helicopter is older than mine.....Hope you can post bigger picture, to see more detail of your work....Thanks.

Hi lazy-b, hope this is OK.
Notes:
-Photo before aerial/doorhandle/wiper kit exc. foreward probes.
-There's an instrument console and foreward seats. Somehow I managed to shift the R/C gear.
-Metal vent grills from kit
-Door outlines stick-on from model car kit I think.
-OS61 Belt start through rear window! I put a cover on the wing.
Looks like it needs a helipad heh-heh. I've got a Hirobo Eagle same age but only pod&boom.
Cheers

Chris, Thanks for your post....yes I see the Belt, I guess its really difficult to Start a Scale Helicopter using a Belt,....my Bell 222 use a HIROBO SST-Eagle 1 Mechanics, it use a shaft start.....I have also another extra Hirobo SST-Eagle 1 Pod and Boom....I was thinking of putting an Schweizer 300 Scale body.

Thanks lazy-b. And thanks to all the other "semi-scale" posters too. They are all fine machines as I see them, all of which including mine are "semi-scale".

You caused me to search for full-size Bell222/230. Anyone can search the internet the same, I used altavista. There is only one 222 registered in my country and not a great colour scheme at that. It seems, as of around 1999 or so, there were only about 240 Bell222 and 40 Bell230 ever produced, full-size that is. Also, I read somewhere that the Bell222b is closer to a Bell230 than a Bell222a, in terms of some alteration to tail-length. I've never measured my own heli for scale dimensions.

I am thinking of the "real-scalers", like Scalejet Helicopters or Len Mount if you have $$$. How far do you go? As you correctly pointed out, belt-start through a rear-window is somewhat troublesome! Better to enjoy "semi-scale"!!!

You can find some of my attempts at "museum scale" (not the helicopters) here:
http://tamaki.mac.org.nz/gallery.htm
The Tiger Moth and the Dauntless are mine. The Tiger has never crashed. The Dauntless was two years work, one takeoff and no landings due to battery failure. I got caught in a loop of trying to make each new model or helicopter more and more scale. Thats fine if you want to, but semi-scale is often much more practical/or less work to crash.

I think a Hughes/Schweizer 300 would look great. At least half the mechanics could be left exposed. I'm not sure if your older Eagle has belt-start like mine, but belts are OK IF you can get to it!!! I'm keeping my Eagle as Pod&Boom for just aerobatics fun, no point in writing-off a nice fuselage!

Here is my actual inventory:
Bell222 /Kalt Baron 60 mechanics
Kalt Jetstream /Kalt Baron 60 mechanics (approx semi-scale Bell Jetranger)
Hirobo Vertol
Hirobo Eagle Pod & Boom
Aerohawk electric indoors (for practising in my lounge!)
Kyosho electric (inherited, never run)

(For anyone new to helis, Kalt went bust many years ago, I just need to keep mine running)

Please let me know what you do with fitting fuselages to Hirobo Eagle. I don't intend to, but you never know. And a video of a 222 helipad landing, I think that's as precision as F3C. You don't need a helipad to practise, just mark out a small precision area and see how difficult it is to "hit" it!

Regards
Chris

Phad, Nice Picture......yes, your right..I don't like to spend lots of time, making your Helicopter a perfect scale....I have no intention of displaying, I just want to fly it....the reason of using a Schweizer 300 body, cause its a lot cheaper....my friend has a JR Schweizer Scale Helicopter running a gas engine, the distance of main mast and tail shaft is almost the same as SST-Eagle 1, I was thinking of borrowing the scale body and make my own......you Got a Hirobo Vertol, my friend has one also, its uses 3 Mechanical Gyro.....Just waiting the detail of FISHSTYX, will upload the video and post it here.....I have also the Kyosho Concept Electrics, it fly so well, but I have to overhaul the motor after 10 flight, its better go for the Brushless motor.

kerlutinoec:
Looks great! MUCH better than just a Shuttle <g> Are those retracts on a 30-size? Those rotor-blades must be mesmerising! I wonder (by exhaust position) if it may represent the uprated Bell230. My Vertol is based on Shuttle mechanics, I upgraded the clutch/main gear to Shuttle Gold (if the same term applies now).

lazy-b:
> I was thinking of borrowing the scale body and make my own......
Yeah. My Kalt222 fuselage kit was an original, cost megabucks ($US350 1990?). My Kalt Jetstream was locally moulded off an original, cost 1/2 the price (not made by me). For just one helicopter, making moulds is a lot of work though.

I often take plaster casts of things like windscreens/canopies. Just in case the worst happens and I can't buy replacements. But I don't do it for whole fuselages.

My Vertol is the same age as the rest of my helis! So it's mechanical version with 2 gyros, not the latest electronic gizmo Vertol with 3-axis gyro. I was asking about Vertol, unfortunately I posted in the wrong heli forum.

Thank you. This Shuttle is my first heli. I bought it in 1992 and he's still flying. I bought two years ago a Sceadu to make sporty fly and I use my good old shuttle to make semi-scale models. (Hope you understand what I mean, I'm not a very good english speaker :))

When I bought it, it was a Shuttle ZX. But during 12 years it evolved and now he must be between the ZXX and the Gold one. I'm replacing the old part with alu ones. I thing I will soon replace the old mechanical gyro by a GY-401. It will be more reliable and lighter.

For the moment, I have 3 fuselage kits. A Bell 206 Jet Ranger III. A Hugues 500D and This fuselage. I thought it was a Bell 222 (this is what the sticker on the rear says) But I must admit that I'm not a specialist of this machine. So it must be a Bell 230 :)

It is equiped with a retractable undercarriage wich is used with a single servo. Actually, I'm looking for improving it. I'd like to have trapdoors on the nose gear. But there is not much space in it for the mechanic and I don't want this fuselage to become too heavy. I think I'll use a micro-servo. This fuselage is already heavy for the
Shuttle and I don't want to crash it :)

For the rotor blades, after an internal verification of the wood, I overlayed it with black plastic (there was only this color when I went to the models shop that day) As the black blades were hard to visualise in flight, I painted it like that. I must admit that in flight it's a little mesmerising. But not too much :)

Since this photo (wich I must have taken in 1998 I think) I crashed (with the Bell 206) and these blades have been destructed ( it destroyed the tail tube at the same time... Longs evenings to repair the fuselage... ) Now I have white fibers blades.

Lazy-b> Sure I like the Shuttle. Mine always flies after 13 years of service :)

Kelutinoec: Wow, detail picture and very Clear....its nice to know your're able to use a single Retract servo....my bell 222 60 size use 2 separate Retract servo, 1 for front gear and the other for rear gets....its so old that the inside plywood, gets Brittle and Ply-seperated, I have to re-inforce it with Fiberglass cloths.

My 222 is getting old too. I must re-do the painting of the bottom (you can see on the pictures that the green and the white are ruined... By the same time, I'd like to buid trap doors on the front wheel. I think this trap will be controled by a decicated micro-servo.

Does anybody knows where I coul find a movie of a Bell 222 taking-off to see how the trap door works ?

For the best underside/front wheel shot, select the Air Angels and then you can choose an alternate shot. Oh OK...

Well here is my ducted fan tail Hummingbird 222
It was the victom of a high forward airspeed rotorblade collision with one of my tiki torches on the back deck. Taking the tail rotor out of the airstream and using a Razor V2 main motor made this 222 very very fast. Man I wish I had that on video. Even though the wreck made me mad the sight was very impressive :D
It compleatly disintegrated one of the carbon blades and cut the tail in half

Madguns: Wow, that a very nice electric BELL 222, look very scale. is that with a retracts wheel......I use to have the FEDA Helicopter brush motor using 7 cell 650MAH NIMH battery.....I have to replace the battery after 50 flight, and replaced Main Brushmotor after 75 flight, and tail brushmotor more often......next time I've should have use a Brushless Motor.

Madguns
Oct 25, 2004, 01:51 AM
I didnt have retracts but it would been easy to install them. It only requires one micro servo and the fusalage has more than enough room to accomodate the gear. This machine is destroyed now but I thought I would share the photos I have of it. :p

This is my electric-powered Bell 222 from 1993, based on a Kyosho Concept 30SR.
It weights about 4.3 kg and hoovers about 5 minutes using 24 1800 mAh NiCd batteries.
The batteries are organized into two packages which can be exchanged within seconds through the removeable front window.

Here is my project. I am not sure all of the specs. Mechanics have hirobo on it. I am still working to get it flying. Has an OS max 50 in it. I think that it might bee too small. I do need a muffler pipe. Having trouble finding one. The engine has the threads for the pipe in the engine instead of the pipe. Anyone know where I can find a pipe?? When finished I will post new photos.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
