View Full Version : Fighter Module idea

I suspect that somebody else has covered this topic before I thought this might be a cool idea. I want to come up with a circuit that allows a flyer to use the "Hobbyzone fighter module" on an "ordinary" plane AND have LED's flash at the same time simulating machine gun fire. If this can be done on the transmitter, I think that would be the cats meow. I know that there are talented people here, anyone have any ideas on how this can be done ?

I assume the fighter module uses a spare channel for the 'trigger'? In that case, look around for a simple, electronic R/C switch to which you can hook up a flashing LED. connect it to the trigger channel together with the fighter module, using a 'Y' servo lead.

If you know how to solder electronic circuits, you'll be able to find a few very simple designs for an R/C switch in this forum. You can build one for less than $5 in parts.

What could be more interesting though is to make your own fighter module and have it wired in with the ESC to induce a throttle-drop/cut as with the Hobbyzone one. . . rather than buying a Hobbyzone one.

I cannot imagine there's altogether too much to such a device... iR photodiode and suitable threshold controls?

Combat ideas were eagerly discussed last year, then quickly died off: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=113754

The Combat AWS System works well and you could hack in some flashing High Lumen LED's for gun fire (but honestly, you will not see them very well in the day time): http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=1091813

I appreciate everyone's input with this. So what youre saying is get my grubby little hands on some bright led's and wire them into the gun circuit ?

I was thinking of taking a very short length of aluminum tubing and mounting the led's in them to sort of simulate machine guns. But for quasi-realism, I would try and get rapid blinking, high-mcd led's, anyone know of a source ?

Another variation would be to hack into the gun circuit and when a hit is detected, you could have a glow wire activate and illuminate the plane. This way you could try a little night combat. obviously this would work best on a slower flying plane like the slow stick.

I think for starters I will assemble that rc-combat module as laid out (thoughtfully) by RC-CAM.

That is the basic idea. You would need to buffer the LED's with a transistor.

You could harvest the LED from the Radio Shack #276-299 Module. These blink and are fairly bright. However, they are designed for 3VDC and may not like 5VDC.

It would be much better instead of having the throttle cut to have it activate a smoke system. It wouldnt be any different of a concept.

That way you can fly your scale warbirds without the fear of crashing them.

how cool would it be watching a plane on anothers six and see a smoke trail suddenly fall out.

I think that would be whirls of fun. :D
