Electirc Motors

Hi All,

I'm pulling an old electric model out of retirement. It's the Dumas 40 foot
Coast Guard utility boat. It currently has a pair of Robbe 600's (I think,
may be 700's or even 500's) can type motors with 3/1 gear boxes. Current
speed control is the old Ace unit rated at 80 amps.

I'd like to go with top of the line motors and batteries for max efficiency.
So I'm wondering about the suitability of brushless motors and LiPo
batteries. I'd also like to keep the ability to go into reverse as well.
Any suggestions or comments?

Hi Chuck

While brushless would let you do without gears, especially one of the
outrunner types they cannot be reversed as easily as a brushed motor.
A brushless needs two of the three wires swopped to reverse the motor.
I don't think any of the present brushless controllers have this
ability. The only way I can think of for reversing is some form of a
switch controlled by a separate servo to do this.
Li Po batteries still need more careful handling than NiCd's or
NiMH's. There are lots of warnings about hazards of LiPo cell in the
aircraft groups. Best to stick to NiMH cells at this stage as cell
weight in a boat is less critical than in an aircraqft.

Jim,

That's what I was afraid of. Rats! A couple of brushless would have been
nice but reverse is a must. Well, maybe a couple of nice coreless with
built in gear boxes. Have to see what the local shop has to offer.

I have an old ace esc and can't find any info on it. Mine says: ET1210. Is
yours the same? If so, do you have any information on how to use it?

Hmmm! Not sure! Mine is currently in storage and I can't get to it easily.
I recall mine is on a ckt board about 2x3 inches. No case, just the board
and components. It does both forward and reverse. You turn the radio on
first (TX and RX) followed by the speed control. And wherever the throttle
lever is at time of turn on, that's where the speed control sets the
division between forward and reverse.

I'll keep you in mind and once I pull it out of storage, I'll take a look.

Castle Creations now makes a brushless proportional reversing ESC. The
Barracuda. You can adjust the amount of reverse relative to your stick
movements in 10% increments.

For more affordable brushless motors, try the Nemesis line. They are Hacker
knockoffs. www.finedesignrc.com or www.starluckrc.com

I'd go brushless in my scale boats, but the thing that is holding me back is
that no one makes a BL engine sound module. That's a great feature on my
boats and I am unwilling to give it up.
