how does it handle? and whats the top speed?

EAMRC
Jul 23, 2004, 03:17 AM
Handles great !! I'll have some video up soon, top speed depends on the motor/prop combo you can build it light with the rib wing or leave the cut outs in for high speed. It uses the same wing as our Pop-Fly.

how much for the wings?

That A-7 looks very very similar to the Ron Laden's A-7 design that was given away as a free plan in Q&EFI a while back

What do you think Ron?

EAMRC
Jul 23, 2004, 11:33 AM
It was designed by Doug Cohen here in Texas he built it as a result of "hmmmmmm what else can I do with this wing?" Yes it does look like an A-7 doesn't it. Ron Laden's A-7 design that was given away as a free plan in Q&EFI a while back looks suspiciously like the A-7 that was built by Vought in Ft. Worth. Well Ron ?

Looks keen... I really dig it's cousin, the F-8 Crusader, which would look similar, maybe even more scale to that wing... the fuse is the same but lsomewhat longer... would this be possible with this kit?

EAMRC
Jul 23, 2004, 08:58 PM
Not really with this kit but after the SorDuH-100 comes out there will be a KindaCrusader :D

Anytime you build a scale model aircraft you are bound to not be the only one making it, since the inspiration is from a common source.

That being said, Ron Laden's A-7 looks quite different, actually. I think each model has it's target audience where scale looks and simplicity have their merits depending on what a builder would want.

Wonder what would happen if you trimmed the wing to look more A-7ish? :)

Ron Laden
Aug 04, 2004, 06:33 AM
Tram, I am sure it would be fine. My design was 25 inch span and flew great at 19.5 ozs on the standard 6 volt 400. This one looks from the photo to have a much bigger wing than I had and providing you keep within weight limits and wing loading I guess you could modify the wing accordingly. It would be good to know what wing span and area the EAM version is.

My A7 was not scale by any means, what I tried to achieve was a reasonable representation of one. I made the fus shorter than scale relative to the wing area (1.25 sq ft) to maintain a small airframe suitable for 400. I did maintain the wing shape though complete with leading edge dog tooth, but as Eddie said it just depends how much you want to put into it from a scale point of view.

I am going to try to get some video over the weekend, we are having a mass maiden fly of 9 A-7's on the 24th at Thunderbird field. So I will gt lots of video then. The parts have been revised one last time, now just waiting on my balsa to be delivered along with the final draft of instructions from the designer. We have also added a cockpit kit to go in the kit :D

EAMRC
Aug 06, 2004, 09:16 PM
The original PopFly wing was 30" a 9" chord and 5" tip this one is cut down to around 28". there is lots of room to play and lots of bashing that can go on here. It all really depends on your power system. On the 24th they all have different power systems and different variations on the wing size and covering. Already you can see that the 1st pic is a standard wing and the subsequent 2 are cut down.

First let me say, Robert .
If the free plans included the Pop Fly wing plan then the designer copied this plane. The Popfly has been around for about three years. If any one builds a model powered by a speed 400 it will resemble this model.

I had the chance to be in on the mass test flight day. Every model in the shot had not been test flown.
It was a very windy day but we flew them any way. despite the high winds the model handled just fine.
I have since flown mine on windless days and can say it does very well. Watch out for the flat spin though. I was testing it's vertical envelope and it nearly didn't pull out in time.

Every one built their model a little different. mine had the cooling "cheater hole" at the back covered. I felt it didn't need it. Turns out it doesn't, not with cheap gear any way.
Mine had all the cheapest gear in it. I took the gear from a totaled Zagy ( not Zogy BTW ) and put it in the A-7.
Other models had a whole array of options, brushless motors, lipo packs, even landing gear. This model turned out to be a kit bashers dream.
Mine will be seen flying at the DEAF fun fly this weekend.

I E-mailed Dave a link to this thread.

I think he's engrossed in the B-17 project.
Last I heard the instructions weren't simple enough.
You cant blame him, this hobby is slowly becoming ARF territory.

Thanks for posting.

I can say for someone who would not be in this sport otherwise thank goodness for Barfs! My pops was the stick ant tissue man of the family.

In all fairness as I learn to kitbash building from scratch is not that far off. I did order your SE5a a year ago and when I opened the box..... well lets just say it's still in the closet. But I bet I could build it today.

Guess I'm just trying to say is we all start somewhere and ARF's is many peoples somewhere.

Just purchased your book BTW!

Lastly I know it's off topic but if EAM could comment on the HE 162 project that would be great as well.

Kieth is right, other projects have been eating my lunch lately B-17 and F-15 are very close to final release and are monopolizing my time. What I may do is a short run of SortA-7 as Beta Kits for those who are up to the challenge and understand that the kit and instructions are not quite finalized yet. Please understand that we have been lambasted in the past by beginner builders for our instructions assuming the builder has even basic reasoning abilities. I will post a link on this thread to the Beta kits. On the He-162 I am going to see the plugs today I will try to post pictures when I get back.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Best of luck on the B-17 release, so much history on that craft.

Keep me abrest if you would on the HE 162. I'm hunting for the Kavan kit right now, you wouldn't happen to have one gathering dust somewhere would you?

Thanks again.

Thanks for the purchase of the book. I hope there is some information in there you can use.
I haven't had any real complaints yet aside from a few spell errors from "English teachers".
I give my self a "B+" :)

ARF's . . . . .I can't believe I pushed that button again.

Its a good thing. . .
It keeps our hobby shops open.
Introduces new people to the sport
Enables apartment dwellers to fly.
People with demanding jobs too.
Yes, it's a good thing but. . . . .they are missing out on half the fun... Building :(

My club President has a neat little plane called the “Bare Bones” he designed back in the day. It’s most likely forgotten by most now with the advent of “ready to go fast” flyers.

It’s available at a great price, and from what I understand, really a great little plane. Now don’t tell anyone but I’m going to actually buy one, open my pop’s old box of pins and see how it goes. However with what I think is a laser cut kit I just might not need those pins!

That said if I can get bare Bones built I promise Ill give your SE5a a try!

Thanks for being a great contributor to out hobby!
