Hi every one,
I’m new here, and really happy to join this Discussion.
At first let me introduce myself: I’m student for master degree in China (I’m not Chinese) with major of Aircraft design, and I’m doing now my project, which is about the “estimation of take-off weight for civil aircraft”.
I have choose two text books as references for my project, from these two book I got two methods for estimation of take-off weight, and the books are:
1- Raymer P. “Aircraft design a conceptual approach” third edition, AIAA 1999, I took the method in chapter.15 for estimation of take-off weight for cargo/transport aircraft.
2- Lioyd R.Jenkinson, Paul Simpkin, and Darren Rhodes. “Civil Jet Aircraft Design”, ARNOLD 1999. I took the method in chapter.7 for the detailed estimation of take-off weight.
And I use the spreadsheet method for the calculations. (Two civil aircraft were chosen: Boeing 737-200 and Airbus A330-300).
After this introduction I’ll give some questions, and really hope some one can help me to give some notes about them,
1- What do you think about this kind of project? Any one had the same kind of work?
2- I’m looking for this technical papers:
· “Staton, R., “ Cargo/Transport statistical weight estimation equations”, Vought aircaft Rept. 2-59320/9R-50549, 1969.
· Jackson, A., “Preliminary Design weight estimation program” Aero-Commander Div., Report. 511-009, 1971.
Those technical papers have used from Raymer is book, and hope I can find in this technical papers an answer about many questions which I met during my work! If some one has them plz send them to me or point me where I can find them.
3- Any notes about this kind of work? And any more information (about the civil jet aircraft mentioned above) that can be useful for doing my work?
Thanks a lot and hope to hear from you soon.

I was puzzled by the intial tossup, "estimation of takeoff weight".
That is something that should be already known.
Airframe weighs X
fuel, oil weighs Y
Passengers weighs Z
Actual takeoff weight is X+Y+Z.
This is a must-know for safe flight.
How statistics enters the situation is puzzling.
You don't want the average takeoff weight, you want the actual weight.
Really, more information to detail the request would be nice to have.

Good God. Why would you do something like that? I just spent my final semester working in a group of 5 trying to come up with our trans-atlantic design proposal. http://aae.www.ecn.purdue.edu/%7Ecrossley/aae451/links.html that is the link from my course website. Try starting there, and BTW, we did use Raymer and Roshkam. In the design presentations should be some weight estimation graphs as well.
