Hello all. I need some advice on a power source. I am converting an old am TX to use with the FMS flight sim. It will connect to the parallel port of my pc. Eventually, I would like to eliminate the batteries from the TX.

Initially I was thinking of using the TX wall charger. Would this work? Probably not regulated?

Ideally, it would be convient to just draw power from the pc. I was thinking of 12V? What about 5 volts? I was going to remove the rf section of the TX. So any chance 5 volts will be enough?

Also, a question about pc safetly. Should I be concern about shorting the power leaded from my pc? Any suggestions to prevent damage, like a fuse or resister?

Any suggestion are appreciated. Thanks.

12v should work okay, a fully charged 8 cell pack is about 12v.

The worst that happens in a short is the power supply shuts off.

You need to take care that the 12 V. supply does not back-feed through the Par. Port. This port will only tolerate 5 volts, 12 volts will wipe it out. You will want to isolate this signal from your computer. FYI, Think about using an add-on card for LPT2, they are about 10-12 dollars, and will protect the computer if 12 volts get past your opto-isolater.
