My dad was a model builder. When I was a young kid there was always something spread out on the dining room table. I caught the bug and have built planes as long as I can remember. I bought a stack of "Flying Models" and "Model Airplane News" magazines from 1950 to 1952 at a garage sale a few years ago and once in a while I drag one out and read it for fun.
I grew up on Long Island and in the 1950's the New York Mirror newspaper used to put on an event called the "Mirror Meet" at the Grumman
factory in Bethpage (a town close to my house). We always went. It was great.I was reading in one of these old magazines about 250,000 spectators and 1000 contestants. Wow! This was for a one day event. I remember the smell and the sunburn. And it made me miss my dad. This is a great forum and I would like to do something with these old magazines for the forum.
Any ideas.

Jimbo,

Some of those older magazines have really neat plans and construction articles for vintage planes that are no longer in print. If there are any designs that particularly catch your eye, you could scan them (provided you have that option) and share them here. I've done that with the PeeWee Pal, it came from an old MAN. I've made the construction article as well as the plans available on the small flying arts webpage (http://www.smallflyingarts.com/Free_Plans/free_plans.htm). You can also email me if you would like higher resolution images.

I agree with Derek. If you can post some of the interesting articles and plans it would be great. I have lots of old magazines that I constantly look through and enjoy studying the old plans.

Some of those old mags are fun to look through. Sorts of makes you appreciate what we have now, and wish we still had all that open space for flying. One of the best things I ever saw in one tho, was an early Air Trails magazine. The caption on one of the photos was "With planes like this, no one would ever attack us." The mag date was December, 1941.

Check with Model Airplane News plan directory. I think it's still available. They have a web site you can order from.
