Getting this message when I try to open FMS alpha version 8. I click "OK" to clear the message, but then the SW never intializes. The SW only worked once, right after install, when I had the program open itself directly after install.
Anyone know the cure?
Thanks,
Andre

andre,
If version 8.1, uninstall and install new version 8.2. It might help, otherwise, additional details are needed to help out like current version you're running, desktop OS, memory, video card, DirectX version. Upgrade your video card and DirectX drivers too.

ggunners,
Thanks for the speedy reply.
It's version 8.2.
Running Windows XP, AMD Athlon 519 MHz, 448 Mb RAM, ATI Radeon agp. Not sure but don't think I have Direct X. Appreciate any further advice.
Thanks,
Andre
P.S. You know what would be nice? An RC sim that works on a truly standard platform, eg Playstation 2 :) Of course I have no idea what's involved in making that happen...

OK, this is weird, but got it to work.
When the error message pops up, close that window or click OK. Then go to Simulation, Wind, click OK when the Wind settings box pops up. Then go to Load, load your model. The cursor will remain as an hour-glass, but the sim works.
Don't ask me why...hey it's free....and good....

That's what FMS 2 beta 7 is.
I do all my gaming on a PS2, so my home PC is pretty basic. Not even a games/joystick port, I have to use a joystick to USB adapter! But V2 beta 7 runs great.

The FMS Forum has some information regarding a floating point error that seems related to having a sub-directory in the FMS model directory for WinME. See it here. (http://cgi.ethz.ch/~mmoeller/cgi-bin/ikonboard3/ikonboard.cgi?s=40eef7eb332bffff;act=ST;f=12;t=268 )

Bill,
You got my pulse racing there for a second. What I probably didn't communicate clearly was: would be great to have an RC sim that works on PS2. Does FMS 2 beta 7 actually do that? Then you don't have to think about graphics cards, drivers, RAM. (Got three PCs for business purposes and none of them are really intended for fancy gameplay). Also with PS2 you got the bigger (for many people) TV screen.
I'm guessing you meant that FMS 2 beta 7 is pretty good at working on a wide variety of PC systems?
ggunners,
I saw that post after submitting here. That's what got me furiously testing till something worked.
Thanks,
Andre

Yup, I meant it runs on any plain 'vanilla' PC with no specialised graphics card, sound card, etc.
Sadly there is no sim for PS2 (there is an r/c helicopter one though). You have to make do with Ace Combat 4 and Secret Weapons Over Normandy (both recommended, especially AC4). AC5 is due in October, looking good:

Bill,
Yes! RC heli for PS2, that's exactly what I want! More info pls!!
Thanks,
Andre
P.S. Going off topic:
Ahh, yes, AC04 good stuff. Thanks for the tip on AC05. Not sure if you're into WW2, this one looks promising:

IIRC the game was called R/C Stunt Copter, not played it so can't vouch for how good or bad. Pacific WW2 one looks good! BTW Secret Weapons Over Normandy has US aircraft and Pacific missions too, worth a look if you are keen on WW2:

Bill, thanks for all the info.
Will start a separate thread on PS2 sims to avoid the moderator's wrath :)
