First off let me say that this board is a very welcome addition to the forum. I am very intrigued by the designs I have been seeing on the board, and the stories about the "old days" are great! I would like to build an OT model as a winter building project. I have in mind a R/E/T airplane powered by a .40-.45 four stroke. I like the design of the Miss America, however, I do not have my heart set on any particular model. I would like to build from plans, and would appreciate any suggestions regarding a good "first" vintage project. I have built 2 other models from plans, a Lazy Bee and Henry Hafke's Gentle Gee Bee, plus kits ranging from Q-500 to sailplanes. Thank you in advance for the responses.

A Miss Americal woul be an ideal first Old Timer. And it'll fly nicely with a 45 in it. They originally flew in a nice gentle way with about as much power,or less, as a modern 25 puts out. And the simple box structure will be a fine intro to sticks and glue... :D

I found these on the website listed in the sticky above: http://www.modelairplaneplans.net/details.php?id=1076, I think this shold fit the bill. Will this airplane be eligible for SAM events if it is made as R/E/T? I noticed on the SAM website the control functions were listed in the eligibility requirements.

Try the Dennyplane. It's a 72" cabin model of the 1938-39 vintage. It's very easy to build and very easy to fly. You can find the plans in Model Avaition. It's a thing of beauty in the air and glides like a sailplane.

Bob Holman Plans has the plans and laser cut parts (short kit?) for the Miss America. The PowerHouse is there too another nice old timer.

BOB SLIFF'S model service has tons of old timer short and full kits:

Scientific Mercury and Flying Quaker are two more nice old timers.

I have built and flown a 72" Kloud King old timer that I found on ebay, they sell kits or plans very reasonable. I loved it with an old OS .40fs, plenty of power for loops and such, and throttled back it would hang in a 5mph breeze!
For scale, that's a G.I. Joe in the pic.

How about the "Strato Streak". I always liked that one.
