View Full Version : Question Where should I put the ferrite rings?

I need to extend servo wires for a large wing.
Where should I put the ferrite rings?
How many times should the wire loop through the ring?
Should the ring have all three wires passing through it?
Is there anything else I need to do to eliminate the jitters I get with long cable runs?
Should I install a continuous cable or just use an extender (3' receiver to servo)?
Thanks, for your help.
Tony.

Best place is just before the Rx

Two turns through the ring should be enough. It depends on the material of the ferrite - if they are general purpose anti-interference types, 2 turns is enough.
Run all three wire through the ring.

Cables that are 'twisted' and not flat 'side by side' types show better immunity performance. Also allow for a bigger guage of wire for longer cable runs as the voltage drop will increase with length.
Should I install a continuous cable or just use an extender (3' receiver to servo)?
Doesnt really matter if the connection is good.

Opinions are divided on the 'where' .. if the purpose is to stop interference from getting out of something - e.g. a motor, then as close to the offending object. If it's to stop it getting in to the receiver, then as close to the receiver...
..in the case of servo leads, its probably the long leads that are picking it up, so near the receiver is good. In the case of an ESC, its probably being injected in from the ESC itself, so as close to the ESC as possible.

Thanks foofighter & vintage1, that's great info, on with the building :) (Now with increased confidence and no jitter).

With those sort of ferrites, its up a trouser leg or down a rabbit hole.
Apropos of nothing, we have a cat that thinks its a squirrel.

I think you'll find that it's stoatally impossible to wind
the wires around those ferrites ;-)

I rewound a couple of moggies and ended up with 2 pole cats :D
