I have purchased the Nexstar model with the Realflight SW to teach my son to fly. Unfortunately I have been flying since I was a kid on Mode 1.
I have changed the transmiter and airplane easily enough over to mode 1, but there is no way to change the Realflight SW. Spoke to Knife Edge but they indicated that it can't be done.
Anyone have any suggestions. Pin out changes ? downloads?

This conversion requires a bit of skill and a small (35 watt or less) soldering iron to complete, but otherwise is a very simple and straight forward fix. If your not the greatest with the old soldering iron I suggest you find someone who is. Any competent electronics repair person will do.
And I'm not kidding and I can't over-empathize this point. If you've never soldered and worked with fine wires before, and you think your gonna pull this one off with your Pappys' old 260 watt Weller soldering gun, YOU ARE GOING TO NEED A NEW TRANSMITTER VERY, VERY SOON!
Also be aware that this modification will surely void any warranty on your radio.
The only modifications to be made to the Nexstar RTF package are to the Futaba transmitter that is supplied. The plane, the installed Futaba AFS receiver, the Nexstar editon Realflight software and the supplied USB Nexstar edition transmitter adapter will all work just fine and do not require any modification what so ever.
Step 1:
Go to the Realflight G2 home page and find the instruction there for converting the USB Interlink Controller from Mode 2 to Mode 1. Follow these instructions for making the "MECHANICAL" changes to your Futaba transmitter.
Leave the back off the transmitter and the battery disconnected for the next step.
Step 2:
Here is where you make the "ELECTRICAL" modification to the transmitter, and when you read it you will wonder why you didn't think of it yourself.
Locate the three wires coming from the new, now mode 1, throttle pot and trace them back to where they solder to circuit board. Now do the same with the three wires coming from the new, now mode 1, elevator pot.
Now that you have located the where each of these pots make there connections to the actual "radio" portion of the transmitter all that's left to do is switch these pot connections around on the circuit board. Unsolder the three wires from one pots circuit board connection point and carefully resolder these three wires to the other pots circuit board connection point, and then visa-versa.
Step 3:
Put the rear housing back on the transmitter being careful not to pinch any wires and re-install the battery. Double check all your control surface centres and throws on the plane, particularly the throttle and elevator, and your good to go.
And that's it. You now have a mode 1 Nexstar. The entire package, the radio, the software, AFS system, USB transmitter interface, everything will now function as mode 1 without any other changes.
I've made this modification to my Nexstar and it works perfectly and I've been flying it this way now since early May with out a hitch.
Remember, we're all in this together.
