View Full Version : Transmitter - tray or strap - thumbs or pinch?

Just wondering what you guys and girls use with your trannies for flying
helicopters - tranny tray or neck strap - I have been using a tray but I am
not comfortable - mind you I am not at the stage where I can really relax in
flight yet.
I know the pinch technique is preferred but after many years of plank flying
I still automatically go to thumbs on top.

Just hold the tranny in your hands
no tray or strap
with thumbs on top

My first RC aircraft was a helicopter. I've always flown thumbs on top.
It's where I put them the very first time I held a transmitter with
absolutely no coaching from anyone. It's natural, "for me!" I've tried
flying the thumb and finger method on a number of occasions and almost
rolled the model into a ball each time. You may have some folks try to tell
you that the thumb and finger method is the only way to go but that's just
"their" opinion.
As for the tray or strap question, I used to fly the strap all the time. A
friend of mine started using trays and I tried it once or twice but found it
uncomfortable at the time. One problem I've always had is holding the
transmitter higher and higher toward my neck if I get nervous about
something I'm doing. At it's extreme, I once landed my helicopter in an
emergency auto with the throttle/collective stick about a half inch off my
right ear! :-) My friend commented that that wouldn't be as much of a
problem while using a tray so I went ahead and bought one. I've been using
it for several years now and wouldn't go back for anything. It supports the
transmitter better and keeps me honest about my hand and wrist positioning
when I get nervous about something I'm trying to do.
All of this is personal preference. On the thumb only or thumb and finger
question, do what feels natural to you and don't let anyone try to strong
arm you into doing it "their way." On the strap or tray question, if you've
never used a tray, I'd encourage you to try one for a while. In my case, it
didn't really take that long to get used to it because it holds the
transmitter about where I naturally held it on the strap when I was relaxed.
Since it doesn't allow me to twist my hands around when I'm nervous, I find
it to be far superior to the strap alone. Of course, everyone is different
and if you find that you prefer the strap then by all means, stick to it.
Good luck & Fly Safe,
Steve R.

There's no right or wrong method Sailor, just preference.
Mine is for a tray, coz I feel it gives me better control, but it's not what
everyone thinks and it's not an arguable point. It's ONLY preference.

I tried a tray but it now sits somewhere in the back of my loft, but I would
probably go home without flying if I forgot my neckstrap. I use thumb &
fingers for helis & FW.

Strap and pinch for me. Firstly I don't like to have to support the weight
of the 3810 with the hands I'm trying to use to put very small inputs into
something which at any moment give way to chaos and destroy itself and/or
anything else. Secondly I seem to lack some precision and control in me
thumbs, so prefer to have them backed up by something I have more faith in.
Just my 2cents

My thumb and finger combined are too stiff. Never used a strap or tray. When
I get anxious I twist the radio sideways as if im playing on a gameboy or
something. I should probably try a strap or tray. But my Sanwa RD6000 isnt
very heavy to hold, probably because of the cheap construction some may say,
but im loyal to its features :-p (and havent got any complaints about its
construction)
