What a fabulous day it was yesterday! :)
Mrs H and I made the run down to Old Warden yesterday, not only to fly a few models but to watch the fullsized evening display too. Besides the constant sport flying in the RC area (ic, electric, heli's etc), there were areas set aside for control-line and freeflight as well.
It was great just to wander around with a camera, chatting to people and taking snaps. I have no idea who any of the pictured gentlemen are, nor any details of their handiwork, so can anybody fill in some blanks here?

Some of the craftsmanship on display was quite amazing; besides the more 'normal' models, I spotted a homebuilt rotary engine and a Cox-powered spinning blade.

Despite the full flightlines, one modeller succeeded in flight-trimming this gorgeous pusher.....

We only made it for the full size display sadly. And I shot a roll of 35mm, so I'll post those up when I can get them processed.
Apart from the soggy ground and overcast later on, it was perfect conditions for the slower stuff.

After the model flying ceased in the afternoon, I stumbled across 'Zoner tonyo, who showed me this Kwod design!
The evening full-size display defeated the autofocus on my little camera, but I was able to bag these pics of the wonderful Sopwith Triplane.
Did anyone else make it there?

My "other hobby" is dog agility with my two Border Collies, and one of the shows I go to is held at Old Warden on the same September weekend as what I think is called the "Shuttleworth Pageant". I'm usually there watching the full-size when I should be packing up the caravan and awning and on my way home!
BTW there are usually people flying r/c models on the airfield on the Saturday morning. Pretty ordinary models, I assume it's a club?

Great stuff Tim, thanks for posting them. Wish I could have been there.
I've been to Old Warden twice and it truly is a memorable experience. If anyone has an interest in old planes they really should make the pilgramage there at least once in their lives. One day (after I retire) I hope to fly some models there.
Re. the photos: the chap with the pusher (FE8?) and Sopwith Tabloid behind him, I believe is Bill Dennis.
I didn't see an electric Sopwith Triplane in the photos though. ;)

Looks like a great weekend.
Are the 2004 meetings themed? In the old days there was a vintage weekend and a separate scale weekend etc. I am hoping that if I come to the July or Sept event there will be as much vintage as this last weekend.

Chris,
Their website at;
http://www.shuttleworthcollection.co.uk/main/index.htm
gives the dates of the SAM35 vintage weekend as 7/8 August, although there's no full-size displays at that meet.
There's another aeromodelling/fullsize day on Sept 11th though....... :)

Yes there is the SAM35 event 7-8 Aug & the repeat model/full sized display on 11/12 Sept but there is also an aeromodel weekend 24-25 July.
I would still like an answer to the question of are the July & Sept events "dedicated" to any particular type of model or is what flew last weekend likely to be typical of all 3 Shuttleworth organised events. I often find it surprisingly difficult to get answers if I phone Old Warden!

According to the BMFA events guide http://www.bmfa.org/events/index.html July 24/25 is Scale Weekend and Sept 11/12 is Battle of Britain Weekend. There are also contact numbers if you want more details. Shuttleworth never know the details because they don't organise the model flying, they just rent out the airfield ;).

Tim Hooper, just got to love that wide expanse of green grass! Much kinder to the models. I've been flying from a dry salt lake which is great for wide open spaces but a bit abrasive on models without an UC.

Tim, this work I'm finishing is almost done and so back to models etc..
Great pics - they must be, because three of yours were of models I was going to post.
Meanwhile, some blanks as you asked.
The Paveley 'Fairy Queen' - old-timer with the three cylinder compressed air engine - was built around 1920. It found its way into Alwyn Greenhaulgh's (sp?) collection and when he died it was rescued by the present owner. There's a need for these early machines to be preserved but like in the USA, there's not much interest (ie money) for the maintenance and display.
The Cox powered 'spinning blade' looks like a McCutcheon type machine - most popular being the 'Chipchopper'. A good way of losing a motor if you can arrange consistent running due to the problems of centrifugal forces on the fuel feed.
The KWOD was printed as a semi-plan in Aeromodeller (details were written on the side of my model as so many people ask about it). It's powered (?) by the most unreliable Frog 80 diesel. About to be replaced by a PAW55.
Here are the first few pics - more to come later.
First a period type flying machine, the Regal Eagle. I don't know if they are still available but I like this old style pylon racer, and the added bonus is that they are made of cardboard.
Second is this CO2 powered Fokker Spinne. Beautifully made, and well flown - this has appeared for a few years now. It doesn't look well used but it is. I am amazed at what people can do with such delicate models - the rigging work is superb.
Third is this 'mystery model'. It looks scale and is well made and big. I haven't a clue what it is. Anyone able to enlighten me?
What a weekend - good to meet up with you. Pity we hadn't arrange to meet earlier. I always need someone to chase after my models for me. Still, the drift was only about 200yds at the most.

One of the 'events' at OW was the Ebenezer mass fly-in.
I took some pics which have a reasonable proportion of the 100+ entries. I also got a small proportion of the mass launch which must be seen to be believed. Tin hats should be worn.
Here are the static pics, and the Tophy! I'm pleased to say that Bert Striegler is now well on the mend after his recent operation. I'm sure he never realised the likely outcome of publishing the original plans.

Here's the 'mass launch' of Ebenezers (or at least 1/2 of it)

Hi Tim, That Sportster you snapped looks as tho' it's a freeflight version of my design for one of the mags. If anyone else should build my R/C one I suggest decreasing the plan dihedral to no more than 2'' a side. Dihedral tends to increase with model age and it makes the rudder very sensitive.
Other pics are super - I miss the O.W. meets so I appoint you as my seeing eye. Geoff.

Last four.
Sparker, vintage rubber, Frog Janus with original early diesel (Frog 150?), and two very neat f/f designs.

...gees Tim, I just came across this thread and I now have quite a lump in my throat. My favourite days out of the whole year were Old Warden 'Scale' and 'Vintage' weekends... cooler with sarnies and beer, folding chair and my 1937 Wigdor Wasp with it's curry Mills .75
Those has to be the modelling events I miss the most since reaching the USA. I must coincide a trip back with one of those weekends... now there is the beginnings of a plan!
Thanks for the great pics and bringing back many very happy memories of just a couple of years ago.

You've got until 7/8 August - that's when the next one is on! Failing that, I'm sure there will be more pics of the event.

Thanks for uploading all those photos, guys. When the modeling world seems to be going bonkers for ARFs, you have restored my unshakable faith in scratch building.
Now, it's time to commence my Jimmie Allen Bluebird for Astro geared 010.
