I took a fancy to an ARTF Sig rascal until I found out how much it cost. Can it be bought in kit form? :)

Ken

Yes it can, probably from the same places as the ARTF.

Kev Mullarkey (who you've met at Shifnal) had one brought in from the USA to the LHS. He stayed up all night to complete the kit in time for the Chester meeting a few years ago. It's a lovely model and was available in kit form before the ARTF came out.

Not sure that it's a vintage design, though it certainly has old timer good looks and the aforementioned Mr Mullarkey actually won a prize with his in the Vintage section at a UK fly-in a few years ago :)

Ken,

Chris Gardiners yellow tissue covered example was built from a kit, but I'm not sure exactly where he got it from.

Here is a picture of the Rascal's grand daddy. I think this would substantiate the claim that the Rascal is a vintage plane. :)

The Sig Rascal does have classic looks and it's fair to say that it was 'inspired' by the old Top Flight model. The construction technique is thoroughly modern however.

Ken, which version of the Sig Rascal were you asking about? They have at least four that I know of. There is the R/C Rascal 1/2A or speed400 version which comes in both kit and ARF form, the Rascal 40, and 110 which are both only ARF, and the Li'l Rascal which is ARF and closer to the original size of its TF ancestor.

Here's a couple pictures of the R/C Rascal I built from the kit when it first came out.

The Model I took a fancy to is reviewed in the june 2002 issue of RCME and is a 72" span version. SMC have it in their catalogue at £249 which is a bit steep for a poor hardup pensioner like me, unless of course Tim Hooper decides to organise a whip round as a crissie prezzie for me?

Tim Tissue covering is a bit "girlie" for me, I prefer something more manly, Solartex for example.

Ah. A big un. I'd say time to start pen and inking (or CADing) a ripoff version. :D

Then you can add "manly" protuberences all over it, if you like :D

I haven't seen the plans for the original one (speed 400), but if there is enough info on them you could always get them blown up and scratch one out at any size you wish!

having seen the EP version fly as well as the two larger ones , I have not seen any tip stalling. It very light for its size & flies VERY well.

Just as a postscript, here's Chris Gardiner with the Rascal I mentioned earlier.

Built from the kit and covered in tissue, the model is powered by a Jamara 480 HS BB, running an 8x6 prop through a 2.33:1 Graupner gearbox. I think......

This was Chris's first electric model after decades of flying by glo-power, and has been joined by several more e-power models since its first flight.
