View Full Version : Motor timers for electric FF

I want to convert some of my vintage models and designs to electric but need a timer to limit the motor run and perhaps operate a D/T.
Does anybody know of one?
I saw in the FF forum that they were talking about a Charlie Hendrickson timer but I couldn't find any information on one. I don't know if it will handle 280, 400 motors or what.
I would like to build my own timer if possible - does anybody have any plans or instructions?

Ian go to the DIY Electronics Forum and ask, you would'nt believe the wealth of knowledge of the people in that forum.

I would have thought a couple of transistors and resistors and a large capacitor would have done the job. Take it over to the electronics...see U there :)

Thanks guys, I didn't think to look there. I spend most of my time in the scale area.

I have put together a circuit diagram and posted it in teh electronics forum for them to tear the design to pieces.
In keeping with the vintage style, it is pure analogue design...so no PIC programming needed. :D
Its likely to be fairly temperature sensitive...it relies on one large capacitor of very variable tolerance to get the timing right, so for competition use its possibly a bit too sloppy. Dethermaliser is not included, but could be done with a similar circuit.

you can make a timer from a ksb engine timer.make a plunger to fit into the fuel cutoff slot and then put a micro switch underneath. when the timer arm comes round it presses the plunger and switches the motor off.
alternatively a tomy timer could possibly be adapted so instead of d/t it would press on a microswitch.
for d/t use a fuse its never failed for me!

Thanks guys.
In regard to using a fuse I know what you mean about reliablitity, however have you seen the fires out here in California lately - I don't want to be responsible for one. This place is so dry it's like a powder keg ready to blow. I think we only had 6 days of rain in the last year and they were pretty wimpy rainy days at that.
I like the converting a timer idea too as I have one of the Ksb ones.
I 'm also interested in fiddling with an electronic version too.
