How many times have you gone to the field and said, “I wonder what the temperature is, or how fast is the wind blowing?”

If you're flying glow, you may not care. But for those of us flying slope, gliders, 3D aerobatics, and so many other types of models, it can be really helpful to know. Depending on the type of flying you do, the temperature and wind can make a big difference in how, or WILL it fly. Some of the smaller models really do not fly well -- or at all -- in the wind.

So with this in mind, I have been looking for a small hand-held weather meter for awhile now. I looked at several, but the prices for the features I wanted were a little hard to swallow. Finally I found the Skymate. I happened to be in one of the Summit Racing stores, and saw that the Speedtech Skymate had the features I wanted, and the price was well under $100. Needless to say, it went home with me.

!Favorite Features
The features the Skymate has are really nice and can be set for about any measurement you want...a nice overview from the manufacturer is in the table above.
*
*Temperature settings include Centigrade, Fahrenheit and windchill.
*Wind speeds can be set in MPH, KPH, FPS, Knots, Meters or Feet PS and Beaufort. This can be displayed in Max speed to 89 MPH or the average in a 5, 10 or 13 second span.
*It is easy to program.
*It has a camera type-mounting base so it can be mounted on a tripod or you can make your own weathervane.
*It is also water-resistant and said to float, but I didn’t try that.

After you program it, you simply turn it on and hold it up. Turn it into the wind (obviously) and look at the LCD screen. The screen is easy to read, even in the daylight. The display size for the windspeed is about 3/8 inch high, and the temp is about 1/4 inch. It even has auto shutoff after 20 minutes in case you leave it turned on. (We would never do that, right?)

The only warning is not to us it in high winds for extended times, like out the window of your car, as that may wear out the impeller bearing and it may need early replacement, which you can do yourself.

I have used the meter several times now and it seems to be both sensitive and pretty accurate. It will be a nice feature to my flight-box and will get plenty of use, both at home and at the field.

HEY! Here's an idea....it would also come in very handy to check the MPH put out by that new motor or EDF unit you just got.
