Starter getting hot?

A friend just gave me a NitroVee Traxxas pro15. Model 3510 with TRXPro.15 motor. He never ran it so I tried to last nite and when I attempted to start it for the first time I saw smoke coming from the starter on the engine. It was really hot to touch. I only pushed the button for a couple of seconds. Could the leads be reversed on the starter causing this or is the starter shot? THis is brand new out of the box.

You might have gotten too fuel fuel in the motor making it hard for the starter to crank it. Try loosening the glow plug to see if any excess fuel comes out while cranking it over.
