i am intrested in building my own 4x4 rc car. i already have the
remote and the reciever. my question pretains to how i could possibly
make a 2 channel transmitter work on a tread system (like a tank). i
would like to put an individual motor on each wheel. if anyone has any
ideas for me let me know.

Unless I'm missing something obvious here, I'd say each channel
controls one track?

Years ago I did a tank with a stick radio, two channels,
had a speed controller on each channel, fed each track's motor.
Right stick controlled the right track, left did left, ect.

Could you maybe tell us more about what it is you are trying to do?
I think we might be over-simplifying things for you.

Well you could either use a stick radio with the right stick turned
vertical, with one channel for ech track, or you could rig up a regulator
system that would use one channel for throttle and the other to regulate the
power to each side (like the old Kyosho Heavy Metal tank/van and Blizzard
used to use). As a kid I was always amazed about how that system worked. The
latter would operate just like any traditional R/C (even a pistol grip would
work) but 360 degree spins would be impossible (the best you could have is
one track stopped and the other moving).

AIUI, an RC aircraft elevon mixer unit, driving two reversing speed
controllers, *will* allow the vehicle to spin on the spot with just
the steering stick held over.

I believe this setup is used on some Robot Wars (Battlebots) vehicles.
