There are burnless smoke catridges available....

Has anyone tried this, this would look cool. And that you can see the boundary layers

Probably not a good thing to do here in Cali with the fires and all

You'd have helis and half of the southland's news system above you in ten minutes looking for fire.

That'd be the last thing I'd do...

whoops that smoke system is to be ignited..nevermind =p

Maybe you can try a tube packed with powder? (flour or baking soda?)

I think you missed my point...

I live up in the hills (West Hills).... I also grew up in the hills (Burbank area), and whenever we would smell smoke, or see smoke, my parents would get very cautious or nervous.

Now, flying up on a slope, generating a bunch of the stuff, is probably not the brightest thing to do.

To make smoke, you need to generate heat, whatever should happen, someone calls the fire dept.. whatever... but this is Cali and all that we've been through, putting smoke generating devices up on a brush dry hill to see boundry layers is probably not going to go over well with the locals..

Just my .02

Jason

edit: now I see your post above me.. as I was typing this out...

Yes I understand the situation here in cali where anything that burns makes everyone nervous. Even with a hard crash from DSING I get nervous about the battery that it could get loose and short out.

How about taping a REALLY long ribbon or streamer behind the plane? Probably won't show the boundary layer as well since the plane is pulling it through, but it would probably look really cool.

I wonder if you used a long enough ribbon, you could create almost a closed circle while ds'ing. It would have to be a big plane and a really light thin ribbon. Ok, I'm rambling now.

Thats alot safer to try. Just hope that it doesnt drag alot.

He TheTick! I have done the tape thing, using a C120 tape cassette, very light and long but it does create some drag. It looks great when doing any violent manoeuvres. Thinking about it … could put together a long pole (lash up some bamboo sticks) and attach a long length of this tape to the top. If it was positioned in right location it might reveal the initial rotor/shear layers on smaller DS slopes.

Ooh cassette tape... I'm gonna try that.

Before you do that, hold a length of that tape out the window of a moving car. Even at 60 mph, you will feel a pretty amazing amount of tension (drag).

I'm sure your'e right. I'm figuring my acacia ds will still be able to drag a pretty long piece on a good day. I'll let you guys know how it goes if I ever get around to doing it.

nwoods is right it does produce an amazing amount of drag, I have dragged  about 50 feet behind a 36oz 60" sloper and it did slow it down a bit but it was worth it, I fitted a weak link near the plane (soft cotton) some of the tape is very strong, on a heavy model it probably doesn't matter.

Drag isn't the main problem (front-side) it's how attracive/interesting your model becomes to other flyers. :D Very strange how all the other normally staid slopers and their planes start behaving like young cats!

Y'know, you could use COLORED smoke... who would think green smoke is from a forest fire?

That will work but anything with heat and ignition is a no no. I thought the smoke system that I found in that link above didnt require heat and ignition

mix baking powder and green food coloring.
dry the mixture out in the sun, pound up to powder with a mortar/pestle (ball mill?)
now to figure out how to disperse it.

either that, or wait till winter again :D... I dosen't get too cold in CA after all. Just fly after a rain. (or IN the rain if your equipment is waterproof)
