View Full Version : How to gear down a TXT-1?

Hi all,

First of all, I really enjoy the newsgroup.

I need some help for a project I'm involved in gearing down a Tamiya TXT-1
as low as possible. I mean like a 150:1 or so ratio rather than the stock
34:1. We're going to be mounting sensors and the like on board, so we need a
truck that moves very slowly. Think 1 mile per hour or so.

One of the problems is that we have Jumbo Kong wheels mounted on this thing,
so the wheels are about 40 per cent bigger than usual (8.25 inch diameter).

Here are some options I've considered:

- Use smaller pinions. Rather than the stock 15-tooth, we've already gone
down to 9-tooth. You can't go lower than that; and with the bigger tires,
we're pretty much back to square one.

- Use a bigger spur. Problem is that I can't find a supplier for bigger
spurs for the TXT-1 and I don't know anyone that will machine one for me.

- Use an inline and/or planetary gearbox between the motor and the main
gearbox. Problem is that I haven't found any gearboxes that will fit a
540-size motor that still have a 2.3mm output shaft. I've looked at
Graupners, Kontroniks, and Como drills gearboxes.

- Use different gearing at the axles. Again, I can't find a supplier for
lower gearing at the axle.

Any ideas anyone has would be highly appreciated!

Thanks so much for all of your help in advance.

Regards,

Waleed.
