Hello...
I am new to Hydros, and just bought a new Miss Bud 1/12th scale...I took it out to the pond...Started it and put it in the water. The hydro idled away from the dock, no problems. When I hit the throttle...Miss Bud made LOTS of noise, but did nothing more then putt along. I was bummed...I thought this boat was supposed to be fast...Yet it looked like it was cavitating. I backed off on the throttle, because I thought something was loose and maybe I was over-reving the engine. When I let off, the RPM's dropped then it took off !
30 feet later, the boat slowed and the RPM's were up again.
What the heck ???
I went to the hobby shop where I bought it...They said it sounded like a leak in the fuel system...So I bought new line and new tank, I haven't had the chance to try it. I have heard, that how you launch the boat is the trick.
I would appreciate ANY and ALL help...
Thanks, Jim

Boy, I answer this question at least once a week if not more.
OK Jim, when you launch it, throw it level to the water with the revs up a little. This is not a set in the water and hit the throttle boat nor is it really a beginner's boat as some would want you to believe. The boat is a hydroplane and as such, it needs to be kept up to speed while running or it will fall off plane and start cavitating again.
Most Hobby Shop employees aren't too bright when it comes to boats. They sell a lot more planes, cars, kites and plastic kits than watercraft if you haven't noticed. Yeah, it's like that all over. Unfortunately most people buy the ProBoat Miss Bud because of what it is, a Miss Bud. It's probably the best looking boat at the Hobby Shop and pretty much everyone knows what it is so it has that appeal. The truth is, ProBoat could have done a better job on it because it will turn off those that might have gone further in the boating World thinking that they all are like it. It has it's flaws but that is to be expected in any RTF boat. We'll get you up and going with your new baby.
Where are you at in Michigan? I'm in Kalamazoo.

Ron,
I have a question also on a hydroplane, I happen to have a Miller Hydro that I built from a kit. It runs great, and flys on the water. My only nuisance issue with the model is that it takes on water in the back end under the cover that the tuned pipe is attached to. Is there any special trick out there that can suck out the water as it is speeding along? This has got to be an issue that someone has had to deal with in the past.
I recently moved to PA, and haven't found a smooth enough lake that is big enough to run my boat, so I am in search for an answer to this and a good lake so I can get out again this summer.

I have watched both the stock 1/8th gas and the stock 1/12 Miss Bud nitro run and the 1/8th does not cavitate, it just gets up and goes fast. The 1/12 needs an extended strut with a 45 prop to limit cavitation.
I am building an electric 1/12 Miss Bud with a Phasor 45 watercooled brushless motor, Jeti ESC and 6 cell Li-Po 3000 ma battery but I won't go on as this is the internal combustion group.

Do You Buy That As A Kit Or Rtr And Convert It?that Boats Gonna Be Tough To Keep In The Water With 6 Cells Is'nt It Please Keep Us Posted

Hello,
Here are two jpegs of the electric 1/12 Miss Bud project. It started life as a stock RTR 1/12 scale nitro Proboat and it has been totally gutted except for the wooden motor mount rails. The hull is of reasonable quality and strength for this attempt.
It has a Fine Design Turbo Trans, mild gearing , FunRCBoats struts, rudders and big prop in addition to the Jeti Phasor 45-3 Brushless and the Kokam LiPo's that came out of a Great Planes ElectroStreak uav. It would be nice to get a watercoolerd esc that has reverse to get it out of trouble on ocassion. The motor is a sensorless airplane motor and would have hesitation backing up.
Early tests with this setup were very encouraging but Ms.Bud would mostly cavitate as could be expected with the stock prop and drive.
I will keep you posted with any progress.

Any more information on that electric conversion?

Hi guys
Im new to your forum
I think ill start by introducing myself my name is Ian Campbell aka Vanpyre owner of Vanpyre Models here in perth western australia
I also work for the largest of the hobby shops here in west aus
I dont know what hobby shops are like all over the world but i am assuming they are mostly staffed by younger people who have had minimal experience with model nitro engines , so something to always keep in mind when buying a nitro powered boat, car, plane or just buying a motor is that they are set rich on the mixtures from the factory the reason behind this is hopefully you the buyer wont go home and rev the motor to high causing a blow up
If you follow the run in procedures to a degree you will get a motor that will last and be very strong in performance "depending on the nitro content of cause "

Has anyone ever watched a full size" Unlimited Hydro" come up on plane?? They spool up the turbine to about 25to 30 % power, then they take FOREVER to finaly plane off. They bang, and howl, shake and growl, and throw water around like crazy. About 50% of the time they will flame out due to water ingestion into the turbine, and have to try again. Models imitate reality.

I repainted my Miss Bud duck poop green, renamed it "Torture", sold it for $100.00 bucks and bought a Stryker Cat.
There are my feelings on the Miss Bud from Pro Boat.

Hey there, I had all the same problems you are having w/ your miss bud except I've spent about 6 months racking my brain on how to make this thing fly. I've finally got it going fast enuff that it was almost blowing over which is peak for that lil' whimpy engine that comes w/ it. Get a M435 Octura three blade and get it good and sharp, makes all the difference in the world, from a standstill my boat doesn't cavitate that much at all now, not like it did w/ that junky purple plastic pos it came w/. I've found out too that the dynamite .15 is a very sensitive lil' engine, sometimes even a 1/16th of a turn is too much and you've gone past peak setting, just gotta spend alot of time dialing it in - I took the flywheel and hub off my stock engine and put it on a Fantom FR .15 car racing engine w/ pullstart. Engine runs about 150 new and has 1.35 hp !!!! Waiting on my new pipe to arrive before I can test this beast out. You'll want to spend some time making the boat really watertight - seems like whatever you do you can't keep a miss bud from gettin water in, but you can sure cut down on it. One important thing I found out though, if your miss bud flips over, you'd better swim out to it quick because mine went upside down before I modified it, and theres not enuff styrofoam in it to keep it from sinking...if I hadn't added some to the nose I would of lost my whole set up in the middle of a lake when it flipped off a wave!!! Cram it in wherever you can. Here's some pics of mine after an extensive make over. If you want any info on exactly what I did - drop me an email @ naptown_mk1@yahoo.com =)

Hi,what do you mean by an extended strut, and what type of prop do you recommend for the 1/12th stock set up?

Message to Ron Olson.....Dear sir, you sound like you know what you're talking about.
So how does one go about running in a new engine on the miss B if it will cavitate? Is it possible to run it slowly enough to run in safely??? Any info would be very welcome
to this novice to IC boats. Many thanks Mike.
