After doing the funnel on the sim, I finally
tried it last weekend.. It was with my r50
with the gv-1, 1750 head speed... It was
ok.. I did it about three times.. I will try it
again this weekend.. This time I will increase
the headspeed to 1900....

What is a funnel? Sounds like a roll? I'm just starting to do some light 3d stuff...I can go crazy on the sim and do exactly what I want, but when the real heli is at stake all I can do is loop. lol

The example shown is tail-down inverted. This seems to be the most popular variant. But there are of course many different variants.

The funnel is a development of sideways circuit flying. By reducing the size of the circuit until the tail (in this example) is turning almost on the spot. Increasing the collective pitch while still maintaining height will force you to increase the angle of the model, and vice-versa.

The transitioning between the diferent variants of a funnel, is known as morphing funnels.

This pic. should give you an idea of what it is

is basically flying tail down inverted tight circuits i guess... hard to explain lol

Another name for it is PIE-DISH. There are 8 variations on the funnel.
1. Upright, NoseIn, CounterClockwise
2. Upright, NoseIn, Clockwise
3. Upright, TailIn, CounterClockwise
4. Upright, TailIn, Clockwise
5. Inverted, NoseIn, CounterClockwise
6. Inverted, NoseIn, Clockwise
7. Inverted, TailIn, CounterClockwise
8. Inverted, TailIn, Clockwise.

Numbers 2 and 7 are the ones I do best, but I try to work on the others as well. Sim work really helps with this maneuver. Because you're pulling aileron to move sideways and collective to maintain altitude, it does put a strain on the engine (more overall pitch). I don't use a governor and I can hear my headspeed dropping, even with a some cyclic to throttle mixing. Currently, I'm trying to transition from one type to another and adding pirouettes. Pure funnels are what I call a "static" maneuver since there is a magic point where you can just hold the throttle and cyclic position and the heli will just stay in the maneuver.

What are the stick movements to execute a funnel? I've tried many times on the Reflex sim, but I can't seem to get it.

For a tail-in upright funnel, enter from a backwards circle. For example, you're doing counter-clockwise backwards circles, you're using left tail rotor and some forward cyclic to go around. Add some extra left to drop the tail in toward the center, then shift the cyclic to right cyclic instead of forward to keep going around. Use the tail rotor to keep the tail pointing in to the center.

For a nose-in upright, enter from forward circles, add some extra tail rotor to drop the nose into the center, then shift the cyclic from aft to the same direction as the rudder command to keep it going around.

when i get home today, i'll record a vid of a few funnels going into a hurricane. if this 14 y/o can contain himself from doing everything else!!!
