View Full Version : Weird rear rotor movement...

Morning!

Right, simple straight forward, I have no clue why kind of question...
I start my Raptor V2 30, wind it up and get ready for lift off, as
soon as I lift of the ground, the tail swings left and right a bit and
the engine sounds like its taking a bit of strain on every movement,
within 5 seconds, with me moving the tail left and right a few times,
the un-controlled movement stops and I can fly happily and smoothly.
Even if I land, let the motor wind down a bit and take off again its
fine, but from a main rotor blade stand still to taking off again the
problem shows its ugly head.... I thought it might be the Gyro, so I
decreased the gain but the amount of movement from left to right was
the same so I dont think its the Gyro....

Any Ideas?

I read further down in one of the posts something about drive belt
static and WD40, what is drive belt static and what does it do and how
can you tell if it is belt drive static causing the problem?

Thanks
James

Are you giving the giro enough time to initialise before takeoff? Depending
on type, giros need a few seconds of complete stillness after powering up to
allow the unit to "home". Any movement in this initial "boot up" period
will bugger it up.

Yes, my Gyro requires 3 seconds of stillness to initialize itself.

And the heli should be ABSOLUTELY still while it runs it's boot up too. The
number of times I've shown people how to do the simple task of switching the
heli on is legion and they STILL let the heli move during the boot up period
and then whinge and moan about the gyro not doing what it says on the tin.

Yes, the Helicopter is completely still... I do not beleive this to
be a Gyro issue but more mechanical.... Has anyone heard of the
Static on the Drive Belt?

Yes. It refers to a static electricity build-up bue to the drive belt
(rubber) rubbing in the tail boom tube. I think the solution was to connect
a peice of wire from the engine (or another large ground-ish area - skids?)
to the boom.

"build-up due to the drive-belt" it what I meant to say

Yeah it's a common problem easily checked. Just spray the belt with WD40 (or
summat similar) and if it IS the static build up, it will be cured. If it's
not, then you'll need to look at the electronics a bit more closely.

Morning all,

There reason the tail was wagging at first flight have eluded myself
and other until..... I ran out of fuel and replaced my 5% fuel with
16% fuel. Wagging has completly stopped.

Thanks for all the help!

Regards
James

Castor?? In a heli?? Are you crazy?? :-)))

Castor oil is for clearing out bowels. Just ask a WW1 pilot.
