Anyone seen this monster, Thinking about doing one! :D If so how'd it fly, Is it worth it going that large? Video would be cool.

I might scale up some plans I'd be nice to get some already scaled.

It's a balsa kit that somebody has plans for, he wasnt 14.00 +shipping. It sounds fun.

Probably a Nosen design, if so I would pass. The Nosen airplane flies well enough but it is no where near scale. Doss Steed used to have some extremely accurate Mustang plans available from Bob Holman that was about 100 inches or so. Might be worth giving Holman a call to see if they are still available.

I was told they were inked by Dan Santich but Designed after Zirolis Plans. Anyone familiar with these folks?

I think Model Airplane News published these plans by Dan Santich several years back. As I recall, the airplane was not exact scale but looked pretty decent and was a fairly simple build. I'm sure I still have the magazine in my collection. I'm just on the other side of town shzaz, if you want I'll put the mag in the mail to you if I can find it.

Well, I am getting a 30something cc motor froma freind that has been treaked to 1.5HP. That should move this thing. He stated that it'll turn about 9800 RPM. :D . Also suggested I go w/ a 4 bladed prop to slow it down a little.

Let's see, 102" span P-51, probably retracts, maybe a nice fiberglass and paint finish.

You're looking at about a 35 pound plane, MINUS THE ENGINE!

A 30cc gas engine (1.5 HP is actually quite low for an engine this size) will make it move alright.

Across a flat paved parking lot!

Plan on at least an 80cc to 100CC engine, maybe turning a 24" prop at say 7000 RPM (approx. 7.5 HP)

That's a lot more than 1.5 HP could ever do.

Is reconsideration in your future?

I certainly hope so....

Dick could be right, about the weight but I have seen 90 inch meister scale p-51s in the 14 pound range flying on small glow engines. Meisterscale recommend a .90 to 3.0 engines. That is 14cc to 49 cc. Quite a range.
Dick is definitely right about the power of your engine, 1.5 hp is low for a gas engine ( usually in the 2.5 to 4 range) and very low for a glow engine (usually in the 4 to 4.5 area).
Unless it is a poor engine I would expect you mean that the engine has been tweaked by an extra 1.5 hp. If it is a built up design that you build light with no extras you could keep it around 20 pound and a 30 cc plus glow would fly it but you are walking a fine line.
Let us know what type of engine you have and what size prop it turns at 9800. Also if you are adding retracts etc and how scale the plane is, some plans like the old meisterscale fun p-51 looked ok but had 85 plus inch wings which were very big compared to the fuse, the wingspan on that plane had no relation to the weight of a normal scale p-51 so the weight was down and so was the wing loading. that meant that a smaller engine would fly it.
Good Luck
Paul

It's a scale plane. I don't have it built yet but glad I'm asking. That is alot of weight and the more I look at the plans the more weight I see.

Trust what these guys are saying shzaz, a 102 inch Mustang would be really light at 30 pounds and 40-45 would not be out of line for the wing area as long as you have the power to go with it. Does anyone know what month and year the Santich article ran in MAN? I'm still trying to find the article but not having much luck.

I'll look on the prints when Iget home. That's one heck of a power plant.
