Here's my scratch buiilt Nautilus. First and so far only sub I ever built. It's about 41 inches long and was set up as a dynamic diver. That didn't work so well. One of these days I'm going to retrofit it with a better diving system.

Nice job!
I know what you mean about her performance.
If I can offer some advice? Perhaps you could look at extending your dive plane shafts outside the side keels and adding clear plexi control surfaces there. The stock Nautilus planes are next to useless to control her trim.
Also... rework your linkages so that the planes run opposite each other (IE: forward planes dive, rear planes surface). I have configures my Nautilus this way, and it seems to help a lot.
I find that, properly ballasted, my model will dive herself. I get up a decent turn of speed with my tanks flooded, and she will gradually pull downwards. I can set my throttle to a certain point where she holds perfeclty level just under the water, creating a really cool ripple on the surface.
If you have any more pics of your model, I'd love to see them. I collect pics of other people's Nautilus projects, and I have plans of making a wepage dedicated to all of the other models that I've collected pictures of in the near future.
I'd love to talk regarding your model's performance. I'm sure with a bit of reworking, she'd be a fine and eye-catching model. E-mail me at bob@rc-sub.com and we can talk more.

Nice job!
Thanks Nemo, you have a very nice looking Nautilus also.
I know what you mean about her performance.

I always welcome advice. I looked at extending the shafts but decided against it becase of the looks. Looks ok in the water but I couldn't come up with a good way of hiding the shafts when it was out of the water. Part of this thing's job is to sit on the mantle and look cool. :)
Also... rework your linkages so that the planes run opposite each other (IE: forward planes dive, rear planes surface). I have configures my Nautilus this way, and it seems to help a lot.

I got close. Between playing with the dive planes and the natural force of that pointy front end I could get the front end to dive but then the prop would partially lift from the water and that would be the end of that. I intended to add a ballast tank that would let me kill off a little more of the positive bouyancy. Never got around to it but from your description that sounds like what you ended up doing. Can you tell me a little more about how you have your sub set up?
I'll try to post some more pictures tomorrow. This sub's got a lot of sentamental value to me. I had a good friend and mentor who started building one. The day I visited him he was feeling a little down so to cheer him up I asked him if I could build one too. He's gone now but I learned a lot from him and I have the sub to remind me of the good times we shared.

Dan,
You can access a full write-up on my project, with pictures, at The Nautilus Drydocks (http://www.rc-sub.com).
My sub is a full static diver, ballasted slightly negative when flooded. Her tank is about five inches long and six in diameter. She is set up with automatic levelling device (connected to the planes), automatic depth keeper (not connected), auto failsafe system (to ballast servo), 25A speed controller, and more!
SHe's powered by the electric motor from a vehicle's radiator. Excellent motor with 10 poles and tons of torque for that 3.75" diameter prop.
I'm in the process of adding non-authentic dive planes aft of the propellor to aid in controlling her trim when under full speed. These planes are easily removed with four small bolts hidden just behind the trailing edge of the side-keels. With the addition of these planes, I should have complete control over this awesome-looking sub. I intentionally modelled them in the same character as the rest of the sub, rivets and all. Only a die-hard Nautilus fan can tell that they're not supposed to be there.
I'll have pics of the new planes posted to my site shortly (say next Monday).
I'm looking forward to seeing more shots of your Nautilus.

Depends on what you want and how much you want to spend.
There are some entry level kits put out by companies like Subtech and Small World Models that would run between $700 and $900 all in. You'd be looking at a smaller model with a vac formed hull, not much detail, but a solid performer.
FAA's right with his estimation, though. Once you step into the higher end kits, you're looking at around $400 for the hull, another $500 for your WTC. Say another $500 in electronics (APC, AFS, ADC, etc...), plus another $300 for a decent radio. That puts you upwards of $1700, not including misc. materials you'll need to build her up (paint, glues, epoxies, etc...).
Hit the high-end hits like the OTW Type VII and you'll be forking out around $1200 for the hull. The only Disney Nautilus kit that I know of in a decent scale is around $1800.
Even scratch-building your hull will only save you around $300 or so, plus you typically won't be getting the same quality of product as what the professionals can put out (there are some exceptions, I know).
You can get away from this by going with a dynamic diver, but a lot of people don't really count these as 'true' RC subs. They are far simpler, and hence cheaper to build, but have a lot of limitations that you'll need to live with.
Hope this helps.
BTW.. I'm using a honkin' 12V, 12Ah sealed lead acid battery in my Nautilus.

petn7,
Well ... your comment is very nice.
But, for the record: My skills and knowledge of the craft rates a very poor third-place, Well behind the Germans and some other European's. And in the States I have to acknowledge Skip Asay, Mike Dorey, Art Meyer, Marc DeAntonio, and a few others who are my betters. And those damn Canadian's, Dan Kachur and Greg Sharpe, they outclass my work considerably as well.
But, thanks for the thought.
In my not too humble opinion the best of the best today is Germany's Norbert Bruggen.

I've been modeling longer then I'll admit to, building boats almost as long as I'll admit to, but am new to Subs. My first was the Dumas Akula, which worked so well that I thought I'd have a go at building the CSS Hunley.
The Hunley design is based around the intrals from the Akula. The hull was vac formed from styrene, and all the external power and control systems were fabricated from brass and aluminum. The dive plane actuating systems were also from the Akula, and the prop is from the Dumas Jersey City Tug. I'm still working on trimming the Hunley, getting the dive planes set up just right, but so far so good. For now, it's so cold out there I don't feel much like wading around in the almost frozen pond, so will resume testing once things warm up a bit.
I must say though, that running Submarines is just about as much fun as a guy can have, where model boats are involved!

Most torpedos and missles use some sort of compressed gas, usually airbrush propellant. Some torpedos are electric. Here are some examples (http://www.rc-submarines.com/id47.htm), from Tim Smalley's site. One of the best sources of information is the SubCommittee (http://www.subcommittee.com/).

The hull is one of three that I know of that were produced in the UK. The chap who did the moulding is not known to me. I believe it is the only one in existence in the UK though I am open to anyone telling me of others. I think I can say that no other in UK exists with the blank firing main guns! The hull is the only real 'commercial' piece with the rest being 'as you go along' so to speak.
It was originally set up for Freon gas operation from a refillable cylinder (de-canted from a large refigeration top up bottle) but due to costs originally, and then the banning of CFC's etc it was altered to a twin cylinder compressor (for smooth operation with opposed pistons) which was scratch built. A lovely beast when on the water but oh so easy to damage when moving from workshop to car. At 86" long you are looking at one end while blindly hitting the other on the workshop door!!!
Worth the grief and all the trimming hassle when on the water though!
Nice pic of 'her' on the latter site!
I want to know why Dr Robert Ballard and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute couldn't be persauded to find her, but having read James Rubridgers account of how he considers she was lost due to American B17 bombers (Who Sank Surcouf) and not her being struck by the feighter 'Thompson' might explain it!!!

I have this one set up at the moment as std. (with front planes operated by one servo and the rears by another). However, have had another 'play' with the the linkages so with some mixing they can be set as U/W 'ailerons' at a later date; that is if the sub works well to start with! I figure that it could all go wrong if one tries to take on too much before trimming is achieved correctly. Its only just been finished so waiting for warmer weather.

Hi Jim, nice fleet you have started there. I also have a 32nd P. type XXIII, it had the original guts in it at first, but I was holding out for a used WTC for it. Still have not got it finished. My first sub was a SSY 1/48 fleet boat, it took about a year to build, I ended up selling it to a guy up in N.Y.. Out of my 4 subs it was the best runner I had seen, it would hold a perfect, I mean perfect periscope depth. I can't say that about my other subs. Good luck, they look really coooool.... Jeff

Hello Rick ,the 1/48 is a scale ship yard hull. This is a big sub ,plenty of room inside her.
I am going to try to get it done this winter. Thanks Jeff, how is the family? I have to tell everyone that Jeffs Type IX is a work of art to see sail . I got to take some pictures of it at the 2005 Regatta above and below the water. Jeff if you ever get ready to sell her call me first. The 32nd type XXIII both have D&E 3 inch wtc waiting to go in them.I wanted a smaller sub to carry around with me when we go camping and these are perfect and the detail on them is almost lifelike.I will try to get some pictures together today of all my subs and some more of Jeffs sub I dont think he has even seen.

hey Jim,
Thanks looking forward to your photos. I also went with the GATO type hull with my fleet boat from SSY. The Balao had too many holes to try to file out, and filing these hulls is about as much fun as standing on your head in a cow pasture.... no kidding.... yuck, yuck ! If I need a new home for my type IX Jim, I will let you know first. Now with the new baby, the subs don't see much action, but not ready to let any go yet... I am like you with projects,,, will never get them all finished ... lol,, but would really like to get the type XXIII going sometime. thanks Jeff
