Spent a few nice hours this morning flying my Raptor 50. Crap helicopter it
has to be said, horrid pitch down in FFF, but thats another story.

Anyway, spent flight after flight breaking my personal 'bette noir', the
auto. I did 'em!! Lots and lots of 'em, some to the deck, some to a metre
or two above, but I did them! Yee haa!!!!

The the last flight of the day I took off and blow me down if the tail
didn't fail...she just piro'ed away! Anyway, a few seconds later my brain
rejoined the fray and I hit the throttle hold and autod it down to earth!
It was a fair way off so it landed with a bump...the right way up! Boom
strike has cost me a boom and a pair of SABs.

But for my practice it could have been a lot worse!

BUT...why did it fail? Blow me again but the tail slider had come loose and
popped off the tail spindle! Yikes!! Hadn't even considered that could
happen, but there ye go. So, I have retightend and re-threadlocked the
little set screws that run axially through the tail blade holders. Is
this common on Raptor v1s?

Anyway, just wanted to share that.

Good on you ! No wind, sunshine. muy bueno.

Yesterday and today I have managed to get through 1.5 galls of Bekra 10%
and the wee webra 52 AAR hasn't siezed yet.
Still have it running rich at full throttle where it misfires a bit at 100%
throttle, turned the main needle in 2 clicks and it didn't misfire at all at
100% throttle but I felt it was just verging on lean at midrange so I opened
it up again.
Main now 1.5turns + 2 clicks, Idle 3.25 turns from closed goes like stink,
still hot but not sizzle hot (I'm too mean to get a temp guage)

Probably had about 2 to 3 hours hovering plus stall turns today, lost it in
the sun once (got away with it) and just practising baby autos.
I can't get the csm gyro to work in HH mode without wagging and have it at
80% in non HH mode without wagging, so I'm half happy with the gyro.
I let it run out of fuel at 4-6 foot twice today (deliberately) and there is
a significant increase in RPM as it starts to suck air so I think I have the
needles in about the right place now. Just baby forced autos.

Put a teddy bear in the front of the heli on the RX / battery (it seemed
like a good idea last night after 1/2 bottle of falling down fluid) however,
despite teddy saving the raptor when I lost it in the sun today, there seems
to have been contact made between the canopy and the RX antenna. As I shut
down for "T" (it was cold, I was hungry) I noticed that the RX antenna has
been sliced 4-5 inches away from the RX.
Can I just strip the insulation and solder it back together ?
is this a bad idea?
a really bad idea?
or
a really really bad idea?

your advice / comments on soldering antenna wire appreciated.

Yah, you've done/built something worng. The Rap isn't pitchy at all in FFF.

Seems like your building techniques need a bit of work. First the pitching
now the loosening.

None of the above. Get the soldering iron out and a bit of heat shrink to
cover he bare wire and it'll be as good as new.

NOT a problem

On the contrary, Beav, how the heck will I ever learn anything unless I
share, tell and listen? Thanks for the feedback, especially re the
pitchiness.

Things to check for a cure.

Paddles. Are they both perfectly lined up with each AND with the Hiller
levers (those things that conrol the angle of the paddles), and are they
parallel with the swashplate?

Next, Centre of grav. It needs to be around 1/4" in front of the main shaft.
Hold the heli by the blade grips and tilt the heli so that it's in the
position it would be in a high speed trun (90 degrees to the ground). The
tail should RISE, not fall. If it falls, it's tail have, if it rises it's
nose heavy (much better for directional stability) and if it stays where it
is, the C/G is ON the main shaft.

If you're using after market paddles (lightweight) THEY can make the heli
slightly pitchy too, but on the Raptor, they're not necessary unless you're
seriously into 1/4 second rolls.
