View Full Version : Hummingbird problem

About 6 weeks ago i bought a hummingbird, my first model heli, but i
have been flying fixed wing for a number of years.

After a good few hours practice, and a few tail rotors later, i was at
the stage where i could get the heli to hover for maybe 30 or 40 secs
under total control.

While i was showing my new "toy" off to a friend (heli flyer), without
any input from me the thing suddenly took off and smashed itself
against a wall in the house, this resulted in a chip on the mixer
board burning out.

I sent off for a new board and one duly arrived, fitted it to the
heli, and tried a small test hover.

The thing took off like a bat out of hell, after i had run the motor
up to take off speed, the run it down so that the rotor was not
turning.

Further investigation revealed that when the tail rotor should turn,
the main rotor blades are also turning, eg if i hold the heli from
underneath and quickly turn it, as well as the tail rotor turning, the
main rotor blades also start turning.

The thing is virtually uncontrollable now, if i try a hover, after
powering down it suddenly appears to get a life of it's own, and goes
wild, taking off at full speed on it's own, a repeat of what hapenned
in the first smash that resulted in the controller board burning out.

The model shop where i bought the heli from tells me that they wont
look at it without payment, and the manufacturers tell me to take it
back to the shop and get them to check the crystals / radio gear.

The transmitter works fine with every other piece of radio gear i
have, but i intend to change the crystal to be 100% certain.

Can anyone give me any advice on what may be the cause of this weird
problem ?.

I am beginning to think that either the gyro or radio gear in the heli
may be at fault, and intend to pursue the shop / manufacturers if i
can discount everything else, all help and advice greatly appreciated.

Youd be better off posting this to www.rcgroups.com in the micro heli forum
