fly4fun, Yes, a 3D card is highly recommended. I've got an old 2D card and only get about 3 frames per second on an older 400Mhz computer.

Try it out before you buy a 3D card. FMS worked fine on my old 350Mhz PC with an old 2D card. It works on my new AMD PC with just the shared graphics on the motherboard.

I just wanted to mention that Alpha8 is running much nicer on my old 800 mHz AMD/3dfx 16 meg video card setup. Beta7 had a frame rate hiccup despite having over 72 fps rates indicated.

Now all that they need is some more models...(hint..;) )

Last years video card technology while retailing for $300-400 can be has for $50-75 on Ebay. The gamers go through video cards fast looking for more performance. Their loss is your gain.

Figure out what your motherboard can handel...ie 4x AGP vs. 8X and then look for on-line reviews. I recently purchased a Nvidia Geforce Ti 4200 for $50. Real gamers would cackle like a bunch of crazed hyenas at this board.... Yet it significantly speeds up my system and I can run Realflight blindingly fast. -Ken

There have been issues with ATI cards. It is only up until Beta 8 (current) that ATI cards work without stuttering and stopping. You must trun off the shadows to get them to work smooth.

On my Radeon 9700 pro I run fms 1280x1024 with 4 sample AnitAliasing and 8 sample anisotrophic filtering. Its looks much nicernow especially at a rock solid 85 fps (refesh rate locked)

Theres no issues with Nvidia cards as far as I know if you want to go that path.

Personally I'd go an old mx440 or Radeon 9000 pro if I wanted to play fms and didnt want to spend too much.
