View Full Version : Smoke generators for large models

I am a member of Tromso Model Boat Club in Norway. We build scale model
boats mostly in scale 1:16. My last project is an old Norwegian destroyer,
"Sleipner", in scale 1:16, length 4,6 m (14 feet).

Can you help me with a smoke generator for this project?
The small units which are available will be to small!

You might be into the realm of small theatrical equipment.

Well, only if you want to fog the entire pond.

Roger,
You might try an oil lamp with diesel/old motor oil. Or a tank with a heavy
wick similar to an oil lamp.

If you can't find a ready made unit, I'd buy a bottle of theatrical "fog
juice"
and experiment with a heater of your own design. Here's a page that might
give you some ideas (though it's not suitable for a model boat since it uses
a salvaged electric iron):

Someone in another thread suggested the element from a 12 V soldering iron
as a possible heat source. A ceramic power resistor might be another option.
They can be driven pretty hot without damage, and the fog fluid will carry
of
a lot of heat in any case. (One advantage to a power resistor is you have a
wide choice of values so you can tailor it to your needs.)
The site above also suggests an ultrasonic atomizer as a alternative. It
might
be adequate to your needs and it would have several advantages: It would
be clean, definitely non-toxic, and wouldn't use nearly as much current as
a heating element. (Fog juice is relatively non-toxic, but kinda oily and it
does smell.) You can buy the atomizer units new from fountain supply
places on line. -Wm

You don't even need to buy one, a cheap piezo disk,
12vdc, 555 timer and a 2222 will work. I adjust the
output with a pot till I get lots of vapor, then read the
pot and use the closest 5%, or 1% if I have one. Most
of the usual piezos seem to work good in the 35-45KHZ
range.
