I'm just getting back to flying sailplanes after a long break. I fly mostly slope, but also enjoy simple 2 meter rudder/elevator planes from a high start, you know, Gentle Lady types. I've noticed a lot of folks using trans red & yellow to cover their wings, yellow on the inside and red outboard. I used to use this color combo on all my open bay (built up) planes. Just wondering why it is so popular. Is there more to it than the fact that (in my opinion) it is nice looking?:)

I've found that transparent red is very easy to see against the sky (for example, the Ascent), while transparent yellow is terrible (the Kelly).

It is a visibility issue. Generally, dark colors, red or black, on the bottom of the wing show up best at high altitude. I like dark red on the bottom and yellow on the top. Helps in deciding which side is up as well ;)
