View Full Version : Moldie question??

I'm thinking of buying a used moldie. This plane has glass on top of balsa sheeting for the flying surfaces. My other moldies have had glass over Rhoacell (sp?). Does anyone have an opinion if either system is superior, or are they about the same?

Thanks,
George

The Euro's like balsa, rohacell is expensive.
I've had both, no difference.
Maybe less surface damage to a balsa core?

I have had better luck repairing balsa core moldies than the rohacell core wings. Is there a trick besides splicing in balsa?

Usually the overall damage to my planes is too much to repair. But for those smaller repairs that I don't have much experience with, I've found that cutting a small foam core to fit inside the wing and support the skin makes up for any less than perfect skin repair. The skin repair is a lot easier once you support it

The spar is the strength, the skin is for stiff [use your own definitions for strength and stiff!] that's why unless you've shattered most of the skin, any wing is repairable unless you damage the spar.
