<title>A Table of Balsa Masses</title>

</head>

<body bgcolor="#FFFFFF">

<pre>I've been weighing my balsa lately in order to sort it (I have a lot now)
and made up this table of expected masses for various widths/thicknesses of
91.9cm (36&quot;) balsa stock. This is simply so I can weigh the chunk in question,
cross reference its size in the table and use that to find its approximate
density in grams/liter. There are 11 tables, one for each of the popular
widths and within each are up to 8 thicknesses. Each line of the table is the
calculated mass of balsa of a certain density measured in grams per liter.
All of the masses are in grams. This table has proven to be quite handy
in helping me pick out the right balsa for my free-flight airplanes and
I thought some of you out there might like it. Please feel free to email
any suggestions or corrections.

No, I didn't calculate them all by hand, I wrote a program. :-)

For those of you who like to express densities in the SAE system,
A density of 16 grams per liter is very close to 1 pound per cubic foot
(i.e. 64 g/l is about 4lb/ft^3). I expressed the densities as multiples
of 16 to make it easy to trsanslate to lbs/cubic foot for those who are
more comfortable with that.

In case you are wondering what values I used to convert the units:
1 cubic foot is 28.316846592 liters
453.53472 grams per pound
1 pound/cubic foot is is the same density as 16.016427483 grams/liter.
2.54 cm per inch.

This table is very pratical and useful ...
I was wondering about Balsa densities, but I could only find some specific technical data in the site www.matweb.com ( excellent materials data base ).
Now, using this table we can preview the parts final weight directly from the sheet and rods dimensions.
Great !
