AIR MOVER
Jan 23, 2004, 04:29 AM
After alot of testing I have this to offer up.. there made to do one thing.. fly fast with a gws50 7.2v motor and 3030 .. I have clocked this plane flying 51mph and yet it can glide smooth and stable for landings on hard or grass surfaces.. will ROG off the ground in 10feet.. nimble up close high speed flying is its best feature.. loops with ease inside or outside.. roll rate as fast or slow as you wish.. will go from level flight to vertical zooms and gain 100ft plus vertical climb before falling off .. or climb out at 70deg ...will fly stable in 20mph winds and gusty..
suggested gear..
2cell pack of 340kokams
2 cirus 5.4g servo's
gws 4ch Rx
2amp esc.
gws7.2v motor '
3030 prop.
Plane comes completed in box ...hinged and horns on and landing gear mounted, tail skid.... mount for battery the Rx and esc and elevator servo installed..
16in span
2.5 to 3oz total flying weight.
cost $20
shipping 3.85 USPS

Ha Ha...Air Movers going to be VEEERRRYY busy. I'm one of the early Windbuster owners...he built me an earlier biplane version...more of a custom job than anything else. Built more for slower flight than straight out speed and wind penetration. However with a GWS300h DD motor on it, it still screams and penetrates wind like no other plane I have. Air Mover keeps building and testing new designs, and recently came up with the one you see here. He seems to have hit the nail on the head with this one...small, lightweight, yet fast nimble and most importantly good wind penetration. I'm glad mine is already on it's way (20" version) so I don't have to wait behind you guys now. :D I am eager to test it out.
FYI, I will be putting a DD300H on mine with a 4040 or 4540 prop and irate850 2s pack. It will be heavy for such a small wing span, but Air Mover says it will still be very flyable and EXTREMELY fast. He has tested similar configs with great success.
The main word of advice I have for you guys is, KEEP THE THROWS SMALL. When I got my biplane, I didn't adjust the throws, it was a real handful,...once I adjusted them to 50% or less...it became a very stable fun little bird.
When I get mine, I'll probably do a build thread to show how the kit comes, how to build it and the power setups.
Congratulations

Brad, After watching a video, I'm a little scared now! :)
This thing is not only fast but vanishes quickly due to
its small size making it hard to see the attitude.
I've never flown an aileron plane before but am a
pretty good pilot with the 3ch ones. Can this thing
be flown slow to start with and progressively go faster?

microflite. videos are generally not a good way to deteremine how YOU will see the plane. Everything always looks smaller than what it does in real life. You do have a point though, the smaller plane will be harder to see, so effective marking and the use of landing gear will help in identifying orientation in the sky.
I'm not sure of the slowflight capabilities of this model...the lighter you make it the better, but it's not designed as a slowflyer. So IMHO this really isn't suited as a first aileron plane. You may be better off learning on something slower, then moving to this when you are comfortable.
Having said that, these are tough little planes...I crashed my bipe NUMEROUS times and have never broken a wing or tail. (plenty of props though ;) ) I have broken the spar once (after I had already weakened it by modifying it). Many of us are using a CF arrow shaft as a fuse. these are STRONG, ..you won't break them in a hurry.

Here is another pic :p ... a very low pass by and you can see the nose is up fixing to climb out.. very smooth stable do to the type of plane it is .. it can track low to the ground without getting tossed about.. due to the power to weight ratio..notice the camera has tobe moveing with the plane to get a clear shot of it..you can see parking lot lamps sweeping as the camera was tracking the plane.. :D

OzzieFlyer
Jan 24, 2004, 12:44 AM
Art...that looks like it would be pretty good. What bats ? the Kokam 340's would be ideal. What's the weight of the motor ?
AIR MOVER
Jan 24, 2004, 01:24 AM
the 250 is heavy but.. if you dont mind a increase in wing loading.. and use some 340 kokams your set for pure vertical on a 4020.. just mount the motor right in front of the leading edge and set up your gear to maintian the cg of the plane. .Im sure guys are going to push the plane with bigger motors. lol.. but its talor made for the gws motor 7.2v or 4.8 on the 340 kokams..I like the case size of the cirus 5.4g servos its a tiny case and the servo's go for 19 bucks at my hobby store..:D
Art Newland
Jan 24, 2004, 08:55 AM
OzzieFlyer,
I've only bench tested the motor so far, been running it on 3S-1200 etec and 2S-1500 Kokam. Those are far too heavy for this plane so I'm looking for a small battery. How much does a 3S-340 Kokam weigh? The motor weighs about 25-26 grams, will be a little less when I cut off the motor shaft.

Art. The kokam 340's are 0.8oz, or about 25gms...same as your motor.
They can handle 20C however !...so about 6.8amps continous. The only issue is that at 4amps WOT, you're only going to get about 5minutes flying. (what a 5 minutes it will be though) ;)

Cue I have made a large order for balsa based on the sells Im allowing it to go to 30 units.. I have 5 spots left.. the next chance to get one will be in about 2weeks.. Im mass building, stacking the wood doing triple cuts, three balsa planks per. I have a good scroll saw for the job .. wish I had lazer cutter. my goal is to have the wood lazer cutted and then all I have to do is sculpt the airfoils and put washout in the wing tips.. I airfoil the horizontal and vertical stabs and hinge the ailerons .. elevator.. horns on the elevator.. landing gear installed tail skid.. .. battery mount each phase will be done in mass .. this is the fastest way rather then one at a time... so my best suggestion is jump on the band wagon.. and enjoy shareing your efforts with the rest of us, all units get released at the same time.. There will be a thread running for everyone to kick in info and post pics mods.. upgrades .. flight vids.. . should be a source of good humor and entertainment... Thankyou for your Intrest Cue

Hi guys, the first brushless external rotor motor will come in at 20grams and will draw about 5amps unloaded running a 4x4 prop on a 2s1p 340 pack however,if this motor does good in the market(and I'm sure it will at the price we will be asking)there will soon follow a 10gram micro external rotor motor. It will pull about the same amp draw,I have been testing the prototype 10gram motor at 10amp draw with a perfict track record on a 6oz PCW at around 100mph.Any one of these motors will be AWESOME on Brad's(AIR MOVER)great little WindBuster.Have you completed you motor yet Brad? Can't waite to here a flight report.

Yes Im very intrested in the cd rom craze too.. and am a avid learner.. I will in time have cdrom motors for these planes.. as a option with the planes.. Im going to test this motor out on this
Racer.. for those who want to learn here is some tricks..
first cut a gws 50 motor in half the bolt pattern matches close enough to the back of a standard 23mm cdrom motor.. what this does for me is allows the use of a metal clip that holds the motor but will allow it to pop out during a bad crash.. these type clips work great for holding the gws50 and if your local electronic store has them try it, this one is a single cell battery clip for a AA battery.. also look at fuse clip holders some are made of thin light metal.. I have fuse clips large enough to hold 300 size motors.. and they have saved me from many chances to bend a motor shaft.. Im going to test a cox 3X1.2 with a gws hyperdrive spinner.. my goal is to get the run time with the vertical.. Im shooting for 3.5amps max draw..
Been very busy so sorry havent had any more input on this thread.. but busy is good.
Thankyou again everyone .

I hope to have a working esc then and will bring this plane and the 18in span and the other.. span for you to work on for testing.. Andy will be a big help flying..my planes with cd rom motors.. This green wing was talor made for gws 50 motors for perfomance above average// However .. there are some of us who are trying the next level with these small planes .. I will be detailing all possible motors .. such as the Johnson 250 .. Im also counting on you guys to try a few things yourselfs .. as I will be focusing on cd rom motors(new to me) now that im finished testing the gws50.
I would like to see some raceing with these planes.. There made tough and very very field repairable.. as far as structure...Im looking forward to shareing with all of you .
