Hi all,
I’m building the Genesis Waco-YMF5 and have had a few inquiries about the kit so thought I’d start a thread to see if there was any interest in hearing about the build.
This is a 1/3 scale, 10’, 50 lbs. Bird. It is NOT a kit to attempt for your first giant build. While it is not extremely complicated to assemble, the designer does assume you have a few birds under your belt. While the manual is well illustrated, (all 112 pages), there are no full scale drawings included for reference. It is definitely a builders kit.
The wings and top and bottom cabane are built using the supplied jigs. Stack the ribs in, set the spars and start gluing. A little hint here, buy your CA in 8oz. bottles. It’s unbelievable how much glue goes into a big Bipe.
The fuselage is of typical box construction. The curved side walls are always a problem in the construction of a Waco but Genesis really came through on this one. They provide they sides preshaped, ½” balsa sandwiched between plywood and curved to the proper dimensions from their press. This saves you days of work trying to get them to match up which you never will.
Once the box is built you start the tail feather work. They are removable for transportation just like the wings. Once that is done you set the firewall and mount the engine. I’m going to use a ZDZ 120 for power. After talking to the manufacturer about the prototype I can’t see using anything bigger. Yeah, it was designed for the RCS215 but with the light wing loading you don’t need that much power. I can use the money else where. The prototype has over 100 flights with the ZDZ120 and the only complaint to date is it doesn’t want to land. You hit the ground effect about 2 ½’ off the ground and it refuses to come down. Wish all my planes had that problem!
