Hi all,

I’m building the Genesis Waco-YMF5 and have had a few inquiries about the kit so thought I’d start a thread to see if there was any interest in hearing about the build.

This is a 1/3 scale, 10’, 50 lbs. Bird. It is NOT a kit to attempt for your first giant build. While it is not extremely complicated to assemble, the designer does assume you have a few birds under your belt. While the manual is well illustrated, (all 112 pages), there are no full scale drawings included for reference. It is definitely a builders kit.

The wings and top and bottom cabane are built using the supplied jigs. Stack the ribs in, set the spars and start gluing. A little hint here, buy your CA in 8oz. bottles. It’s unbelievable how much glue goes into a big Bipe.

The fuselage is of typical box construction. The curved side walls are always a problem in the construction of a Waco but Genesis really came through on this one. They provide they sides preshaped, ½” balsa sandwiched between plywood and curved to the proper dimensions from their press. This saves you days of work trying to get them to match up which you never will.

Once the box is built you start the tail feather work. They are removable for transportation just like the wings. Once that is done you set the firewall and mount the engine. I’m going to use a ZDZ 120 for power. After talking to the manufacturer about the prototype I can’t see using anything bigger. Yeah, it was designed for the RCS215 but with the light wing loading you don’t need that much power. I can use the money else where. The prototype has over 100 flights with the ZDZ120 and the only complaint to date is it doesn’t want to land. You hit the ground effect about 2 ½’ off the ground and it refuses to come down. Wish all my planes had that problem!

I'm very interested in following your building of this Waco.
I did talk with Danny,(via e-mail)when I first became aware of this kit. Seeing "Mike Barbee's" 1/3 Waco in several magazines, really caught my interest in a 1/3 scale YMF-5. It's so big and so very cool, I would really like to do one some day. I think that it would be a very good airplane to start " Scale Competition" with. looking forward to seeing it finished however long it takes.

I TOO HAVE HAD INTEREST IN THIS PLANE. I WAS PLANNING ON PUTING A FOX 6.4 TWIN ON THE NOSE AND A TURBINE ON THE BELLY. THE PROTO TYPE LOOKED VERY NICE. MY PLANS HAVE TURNED TO ANOTHER DIRECTION, BUT I STILL HAVE THOUGHTS OF A TURBINE WACO SOMEDAY.

Hi. I`m from Brazil and I saw the file about the 1/3 Waco YMF5, a plane that I simply love. I saw a video from the Joe Nall Contest and it flies really great. And I agree about to use a small engine like the 120 ZDZ. RCS is too expensive.
I was thinking, Pushhod, if I could have a copy of your plans. I`d love to put my hands on it (smiles).
If you wish, write to e-mail: jeep1958@ig.com.br and we can talk about. Could you??
Thanks. Renato Fallero.

The Genesis Waco-YMF5 is a builders kit that comes with all parts laser and CNC cut. Wing panels and top and bottom cabane are built over the supplied jigs. The fuselage parts all have index marks for alignment and goes together very nicely. Bottom line is, you don’t need full size plans and they are not supplied from Genesis. I assure you, they would only be in the way more than any help in the construction of this kit. For those who are interested in the construction sequence of this kit you can look here.

If you have questions about the construction of this beast post them here and I’ll try to answer them for you.

What do you mean-"full size plans are not supplied"? What kind of kit is it? HeHeHe...
I have been corresponding with Georg, the Century LG have been ordered, plus I just had 2 sets of Georg's brackets cut. Should be starting it soon.

Here's a photo you might like of a Waco YMF. It is one of the new ones built in 1992 at a cost of $211,000.

I never gave a Waco much thought untill I saw Mike Barbee's big yellow one in a couple of mag's, a few years back. I've got a set of 1/4 scale plans, but the extra bigger-ness at 1/3 give's the model that really big presence. I've got a whole bunch of projects that I would like to do. all the way from a couple of parkflyers & 1/2A twins to Giant scale.
And the Waco is very high my I really want to do one list. Just hope that I will be able to afford it some day.

Several years ago, I visited the Waco factory at Battle Creek Michigan. What a great experience!
I also work in the Vintage Aircraft Division of the EAA at the annual Oshkosh air show each summer, and there are always about two rows of Wacos. There is just something "special" about these maginificent airplanes!
