View Full Version : Joule of a blimp?

Has anyone tried a blimp on the new Micro Joule system? I'd think this would be perfect, being so light weight? Maybe a sorta scaled down MB1?

The joule servos show little promise for micro anything as most say they center poorly and have relatively low torque. Most use the MJ receiver with Falcon micro servos. But it definately sounds possible.

I have been thinking of this more and more. With the ESC, 2 servos and Reciver with xtal and wires at .3 oz, a 2 cell E-tec 250 mah lipoly pack (.5 oz) plus a motor, prop and "frame" I'm guessing 2 cufeet of helium should do the trick. I'd almost like to do it with party baloons (for the fun of it), but they are only 18" in diameter and maybe 6" thick in the middle. This suggests that I'd need 4 or more of them. I've seen they make 36" ones but have not found one at my local party supply place yet. Before I start down this path, I'd love to hear from those with more experience.

I am also considering designing a single motor, multidirectional trust system. If what I have in mind works, the single motor would provide up, down, left and right on a 2 servo pull/pull type arrangement. Has anyone tried something like this?

this was in an issue of rc microflight

Close-up of the motor mount on the author’s Red-Eye blimp. The motor can pitch and turn for full vectored thrust control.

it used what they called a gimball to allow it to turn in any direction.

I subscibe to micro flight, but don't recall seeing it. I must have in since it's very similar to what I was thinking of. Specificallt I was thinking of mounting the motor on a CF rod. Then attaching the rod to another CF rod using wiring shrink wrap with a bit of a gap between the rods. If it works, this would give a bendable joint.

Well since it has been below zero for days in a row and it's now snowing I have started the MJ blimp. I have an old surplus motor (N20, M20 not sure?) with a 3x2 GWS DD prop. This is mounted to a CF rod with Kevlar thread and CA. The bendable joint I described is working well so far. I have a 2 cell Tech lipoly pack on order.

Now I need to figure out how to mount this mess to the ballon. Since the motor can be tilted up it have to be below the ballon by avout 4 inches. As always suggestions welcome.

I'll post pictures if I ever get it done.
