Is the tailboom size different between the standard Mantis and the new "Pretty" Mantis?

What is the the OD/ID of the carbon boom?

Has anyone tried installing Microservos directly in the V-Tail? If so how did it turn out? Any pics?

Yes there is a difference between the old Mantis and Pretty Mantis.
The Pretty Mantis is about twice the diameter of the old.

I think Bill Haymaker used the standard Mantis fuse and mounted the servos in the tail. Here is the link (http://www.charlesriverrcpictures.org/eos_reading_03/136_3606.html) to a picture I took at the EOS contest.

Take a look here (http://www.charlesriverrcpictures.org) and click on "Davis 09/14/03" for more pictures of the Pretty Mantis setup.

Radian,

You might also want to post your question here, this is a forum dedicated to Mantis topics.

you will find support from the makers, Phil and Terry

I have a Mantis that had the tail servos mounted in the tail when I got it from the previous owner. I flew it that way for about a year and it worrked OK. BUT one of the good attributes of the Mantis is it allows you to size the length of the fuse from wing to nose so that no nose wt is rqd. If you put extra wt in the tail you need to make the fuse longer and a little heavier. Weight at the extreme ends of the fuse increase the moment of inertia slowing its response to control in pitch. Finally the tais are a pretty fragile structure for carrying the servos. The good part is you get rid of the long pushrods rqd when the servos are in the pod. You have to add long wires to reach the servos.
Mine plane got temporarily parked in a tree and landed on the tail when we extracted it. That broke both of the tail servos, which I replaced with servos in the pod which I have used ever after. I have 3 Mantis fuses and an Aegea, all with servos in the pod. I don't plan to put servos in the tail again. I just read a nice history of the Mantis. The first Mantis had servos in the tail. It also weighed 100 ozs.

Here is the story:

The History of the Mantis (http://www.b2streamlines.com/MantisHistory.pdf), written by Anker Berg-Sonne. The story unfolds beginning with the evolution and concluding with interesting developments which are curently underway. From the beginning of the Mantis to it's current state of evolution, Anker talks about the major changes that occured during the Barnes era, the Luckenbach influence, the Drela revolution, and Phil Barnes who came to the rescue, again. Yes they are different in both construction and diameter.
Mantis OD: 0.71

Pretty Mantis
OD: 1.01
ID: 0.97

I believe Phil Barns still uses the tail servos configuration, and I also believe he might be using the Dymond D60 Sub Micro...

If you are really interested you should ask him.

The micro servos in the tail only work with the mantis tail, but should not be used with the Aegea tail since the surface is much larger and would tear the gears.

I flew all last year (this past ESL flying season) with, I think CS-10, in the Drela's Aegea tail. The second post made by Fast-Forward has a link to a picture of the plane I built/bagged and flew.
