Being realitively new to RC planes, combat is one of the reasons I am interested. Both of my sons and I are interested in combat. (Great way to take on Dad) I am mostly interested in electric combat.

Once we learn to fly, what do you suggest to get started in combat? (A very open question for very open answers)

Any Oregon (PDX area) e-combat flyers out there?

I have been flying gas combat this year and some of our club members have tried zagi combat with out streamers. Since I had a zagi, I joined in. Members with Unicorns seemed to survive mid-airs better than the stock zagi but when the battery is better secured, the zagi is more competive. In gas combat, the new ssc class is a good place to start. ssc stands for slow survivable combat. You are restricted to a .15 displacement engine that retails for under $60. The engine must use a master air screw 8X3 propeller and tach not more than 17500 rpm. the plane must weigh at least 2.5# and have a wing area of at least 400 square inches. We have found that much larger wing areas with 64 inch wing spans fly really nice. The object is to cut the crep paper streamer from opponet's planes rather than ramming them as in electric zagi combat. Mid air collisions do happen and a well constructd plane survives most of these. Rules for this event can be found on rccombat.com The members of my club have been reluctant to pick up the gas combat quickly, but a couple plan on some planes for next season. I have had fun with the electrics. Any combat is fun compared to no combat.

I have been flying gas combat for about 3 years now. It is a blast. The SSC, has definitely made a change for the better. But I still love open B with the power and speed. Scale is beautiful to watch. Go to www.rccombat.com for heaps of info on RCCA (an AMA special interest group) style combat. About a year ago my buddies and me decided to try electric combat. we tried zagis and mini speed wings, and it was fun but hard to hit each other at that speed and distance. We now use mini IFO's. It is the most fun. Why? you can easily get 20 hits inside of 10 minutes, the planes rarely break anything. and because its so easy to "smack talk" while you fly. Plus we can go to a local field and not have frequency conflicts and have to wait a half hour to get all 4 planes to fly at the same time, like at the club field.

If you think it might be FUn, it is!!!! Go to this forum topic and view the videos. If that does not get you ready to try combat, nothing will. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=178123
