This was after my first combat experience almost 3 years ago. 'Butcher" in wichita totaled my stick. The plane lasted 3 rounds before it met its demise. I have been hooked ever since.

This is my present project for the spring next year.
It is a Falcon 64 I will be using at our clubs .15 combat events.
I have a second one on the way and will be doing a step by step build on it here in this forum.

Here's what I THINK I'll be flying next season. I've got plenty of shop time coming up this winter to design something else. Most of these planes survived the Georgia Holiday Classic last weekend, my pride, however was severely bruised!

These 3 Barracudas are my own design for Open B. Of course, like every other plane it's based on parts of other people's designs, with a few new things thrown in. 1/2" HDPE fuze, E-203 airfoil, 64" span, 600 sq/in area. 3# 6 oz.

These are the SSC version of the Barracuda. They flew really well at the GHC.

8 rounds of SSC with 5 mid-airs. All I lost was a battery-pack, 5 props, and 10 rubber bands!

This is a Open B Falcon that my son Mike built 3 for me that is about to get test flown during Nov 2003 Houston contest which we CD'ed together. Awesome airplane which I set up to be pretty docile compared to the way the "big boys" do there stuff but it keeps me out of the dirt. Lee's design and building techniques are the work of a master!

PM me with any questions you have reguarding posting pictures. Most of the time the problem is due to the picture being posted being to large and the size of the image file may need reduced.

This is a photo of my Lee Liddle designed SSC Warbird. It is a P39 with 64" span, weighing 2-3/4lbs (44 ounces) powered by an OS LA .15 running fed by a latex tubing bladder tank.

This is an experiment. It has 11 flights on it to date. It is a DIS200 which the Russians gave the production designation MIG5 to. Only two were built as the USSR did not have production capacity during the early war years that they could give to this design.

As shown it is built from 25lbs Dow foam, spans 56", is powered with two OS LA .15 CL engines fed by a single latex bladder tank, weight is 3 lbs 15 ounces, the fuse is covered with .75 ounce glass cloth and the wings are covered with polyester dress lining, the painted finish is exterior latex.

This photo shows two SSC Warbirds and one Scale 2610 fighter. All have been flown with success in AMA/RCCA combat contests. At the top is the Boeing XF8B made of foam with ply crutch covered with blue polyester fabric. The KI61 and the stretched F8F Bearcat both use the Eppler 203 airfoil with washout. If I were to do them again (I did about 5 KIs) I would remove the washout as it is not needed at SSC speeds and only creates unwanted drag.

Those 1/2A combat planes are too cool! I'm going to have to make one. Don't know if there will be anyone to fly with, but I'll be the first in Dixie to have one.

Montague
Jan 13, 2004, 06:26 PM
Yeah, they are cool. Though we discovered that weight is even more critical on these things than on any other class of combat. (duh, I guess). They fly ok, but the best flying one had a sub-micro throttle servo and had been really lightened. The origional design in the picture is way over-built and too heavy to really fly as well as it should for that class. After I get my A, SSC, B and 2610 stuff ready, I'll be doing a new 1/2A plane that should be a bunch lighter.

Btw, Bill Davis did the origional design, and they are pretty darn good considering how quickly he and Chris designed and kitted them for us.

HavingFun2002,
The GRS 72" Falcon with an OS LA .15 fueled with a bladder tank is a very fast SSC plane. It will also out turn almost anything else. It only weighs 2lbs 9 ounces ready to fly and has almost 760 square inches of wing area.

I have been flying Warbirds in SSC but flew the last four rounds of this weekends Valentine Massacre with the 72" Falcon. I like it so much that I ordered three more last night.

I also put a Fora .15 on one. This is a very light, high performance, Russian CL Combat Motor the plane only weighs 2 lbs 7 ounces with this engine. Anyone who saw it fly with this setup on Saturday can attest to what it will do with a high performance motor. I am bring OS powered Falcons for SSC to the Mid Atlantic Championship in August and Fora powered Falcons for Open A.

I wouldn't have believed how fast they are either, I had to see it to believe it.

I have a Falcon 64, I put a .15 OS CL on that and it did great in some test I did this weekend. That may be my Open A ship this season, I used the Falcons for Open B last year. They fly great, nothing can catch them, but any contact at Open B speeds will blow them apart. I'll stick will the Skull Bandits for B, they are just more durable. However, I think my Open A stuff will be Falcon 64s unless I find something better.

I'll be at the Mid Atlantic Champs this year. That's my home field. See you there.

That's a pretty funny picture of me looking at my 1/2A plane. I was acutally getting rather frustrated, my engine just wasn't running right. I hope to get that fixed, but I need to find some of the right kind of fuel tubing and get my tank sorted out, I think that was the cause.

Mid-Atlantic's should be a really interesting contest this year. I'm going to stick with my same A class planes I've been flying, but I might have a surprise ready "just in case". Not sure yet, but August is pretty far away, so lots of time there.

That is great news that you are going to the contest. I am going to one the weekend before in Cincinnati (Havoc over Hamilton) and the one in Nashville too.

I think we will have 6 Atlanta pilots at the Tennessee contest. I am bringing wet weather streamers in case of rain.

Hope to meet you there.

I thought the RCCA Combat rules said that the CD is to provide all the streamers used in a sanctioned match?

If it is really wet we might not come or maybe just come and watch.

We are having a fly-in May 22nd for any type of R/C flying. MAYBE a combat flight or two in the afternoon if enough guys want to. Don't know. We have more details at www.wtrcf.org under 'Events.' Our actual announcement flyer should be completed and up in a couple of days.

I thought the RCCA Combat rules said that the CD is to provide all the streamers used in a sanctioned match?

Sure, that's the theory. But a lot of us die-hards travel with our own streamers for backup use in case the CD needs it.

The important thing is that everyone is using the same stuff. If Lou shows up with the forestry tape and gives it to the CD who then passes it out to everyone else, that's fine. But you won't see Lou or anyone else using one kind of streamer while everyone else uses a different streamer material.

It's true that russians never had a spitfire, but i just wantet my spit in winter colors, so i looked the scheme from a MIG :)

The tail on photo is not yet equiped with elevator, that's why it seems bit short.

Because this is my first motor plane, i flew it only 2 times, but i crashed it both times :) :) But it was never my fault. First time, the engine was not set up correctly so when i threw it, it just hadn't had enough power to take off. :(
The second time the plane flew, and was very neutral in flight, but after the second turn, the nut on the servo - aileron connection fell of, so i had just one aileron working, i culdn't get the turn and the plane went straight into the forrest and crashed into a 30m tree and than fell to the ground  , but on my big suprise, only the first ribb with motor on broke, and the elevetar on tail was damaged :D
Now the spit is in garage for repair, and I'm also working on a new combat plane Mustang P51

My Texan survived this first battle! It was by far the slower model, with his OS .15 CV and traditinal balsa wing structure, since opponents are all .21 Mvvs and Novarossi monsters with fiber fuse and foam wings, but it survived!

Two tails cutted, not so bad for a first time strike. And, ugh, a 200 points penalty for out-of-borders flying... Actually, my plane tipstalled and spin, so I tried to recover... Unfortunately, the exit form spin is when the plane itself decided: straight out of battlefield :D

Much many other combat pics on my site:

http://www.masali.com/Inside/Models/Cremona/cremona.htm

Come and see, RC combat in Italian style (our rules are a bit different respect to Usa and other Eu countries rules; tipically, we allows more powerful engines with tuned exaust and models can be more out-of-scale).

Here is one of my RC airplanes I would like to sell. 47" wing span combat airplane. It has an OS40LA engine I will sell it with or without the engine. The engine has only been used a few times so its not broke in yet. I will take $150.00 for the airplane, transmitter, receiver, servos without the engine. $225.00 with the engine. Top side of the airplane is RED the bottom side is BLUE. With a 4 pitch prop it will fly about 55 mph. Every time you increase the prop pitch by 1 the speed increases by about 10 mph. It will do 75 mph with a 6 pitch prop and about 105 mph with a 9 pitch prop. Glide ratio is very good it will fly 1/4 mile dead stick. It has a bladder fuel tank it will hold 8 to 10 minutes of fuel. It will do loops in about 8 foot diameter circles. The airplane weighs about 8 ounces without the engine, servos, and receiver. If you are interested in this or know anyone that might be interested let me know I am going to post this on one of the RC forums tonight. I am not a member of any RC forum so I will have to register that might take a while will try to get that all done tonight if I have time. I need to leave I will be home again about 8pm tonight. I also have a used OS46LA I would swap out with the OS40 engine for $10.00 less.

I don't see any option to upload the pictures. This is my first time on this forum I don't know how it works.

Here are pictures of my foamfighters, All these planes are made out of 1/4 inch bluecore foam and are designed to be flown with basic GWS hardware the new Hellcat plane was made out of 6mm depron foam. nasic setup for all kits is:

Setup for brushed motors:
I use the GWS EPS-350 motor and gearbox with ball bearings. The best ratio is 4.43 to 1 or “B” or 5.33 to 1 “C”
8060 slowfly props on the “B” drive.
9070 slowfly props on the “C” drive.

Speed Control: Use one that delivers up to 10amps. I like the GWSISC300

Batteries: Use High Discharge Lipoly 350 ma, 700ma, 900ma, to 1000ma. Avoid using a battery over 1000ma. It will add too much weight. Lighter is better with electrics.

Receiver: GWS GW/R4PII72/H/F, 4 Channel Receiver

Servos (2 required) GWS/NR/STD/F, Naro Standard Servo

Transmitter A good computer radio works best but this planes will fly using a simple 3 channel radio planes are only setup with Ailerons/Elevator/throttle

All Flatfoam Fighter kits include:
paper decal sheets
carbon rod wing brace
1 set of control rods
wire for control services
Motor mount for EPS type motor.

Building materials required:
foam safe glue ( I found that using 5 minute epoxy works the best) (30 minutes also if you need more time)
A xacto knife with # 11 blades.
packing tape ( the kind with fibergalss strings in it) and one roll of standard clear packing tape.
I paint all my planes with Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic paint from Michaels craft store comes in 100's of colors
goes on great with a spong brush or can be thinned for airbrushing.
glue stick for applying paper decals

Kits can be built under 3 hours.

Contact me about these kits and others.

Hi

Here is my scratch built Me262 built to 1/12 scale from blue foam with brown paper covering and enamel paint finish. Power is provided by two OS15LA engines each with a 4oz fuel tank. Total weight, dry, is just under 3lb. Currently waiting its first flight....... and fight.

Here is another combat model from my 1/12th scale collection of Luftwaffe fighters.

Construction is blue foam with brown paper covering. Twin OS15CVA engines provide the urge.

The lower fin is held in place by a short, dome headed, locating dowel and a strong magnet.......this ensures a safe departure on harder landings.

Pulls away from a self hand launch without any problems and the rear propeller easily clears the launching hand.

This model has completed several flights and turns well. Total weight is 3lb 12oz including 6oz of nose ballast to move the CG forward.

Should hopefully compete this year in the UK.

I made it to prove a point with my fellow combat pilots here in the UK.....some said it wouldn't work and that I'd have all kinds of engine thrust line problems etc etc. A little down thrust on the rear engine is all that was required to make a great model. Here are a few construction shots showing the foam and brown paper construction. I was lucky enough to visit Maryland earlier this year and see the original Dornier Do335 at the museum at Dulles :) .

Future E-combat plane made from fff. Sports a 32"WS and will be powered by a BP21.

The design of the Funder is the brain child of ROBB (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=363570)

Hey,

Here is my one of my comabt planes, and I haven't flown in a meet yet, but its bloody quick. Can cover 3 soccer feilds in about 7 seconds flat at WOT. It's about 2.5kg, and has a .46 engine swinging a 11x7 prop, wingspan of about 1m and about 850mm long.I love this plane, its the quickest thing I've flown and own. Love it.

How about a 14 pound, almost 8ft span Gremlin powered by a 31cc Ryobi weedeater motor? Loved the small gremlins and had to have an obcenely large version. Of course I don't use it for combat though.

Here's shots of just a few of the combat aircraft that my father and I have designed and built. We are looking to get back into flying combat. We have molds for some of the aircraft we designed and are thinking about doing some production in the future.

from RACores. I've flown it in combat but I fly it more just as a fun fly plane. I've got some pretty big gaps between the elevons and the wing, the aileron stock had a curve to it. I'm not too worried about it though, after all it is a combat plane. As soon as I get an apartment of my own, I intend to do more building of all sorts, and you can bet there will be a couple more Gremlins around. (Ignore the date on the photo, I think it was taken January of '07)

The P-70 was an interim night fighter configuration of the Douglas A-20 Havoc. This version has a 60" wingspan and weighs 4.5 pounds. Power is two OS .15LAs turning MAS 8x3 Combat props at around 17.5K using a single pressure bladder in the bomb bay. Maiden flight yesterday exceeded intial expectations with a sustained climb angle of about 30 degrees, good roll and good sustained turn capabilities. Should be a unique bird and easy to figure out which one is mine :) Construction is all blue foam with balsa tails. My buddy Scott Stockwell cut the wings and Cash Hargett did the covering and the maiden flight. Other than wanting to spit muffler bolts, the first flight was uneventful.
