 God what i have gotten myself into, i ran across a complete set of Art Johnson plans for a scratch P-40B this is plane has a 85" wing span, i have flown smaller p-40' in the past but nothing like this, what size engine should i use and prop, fixed or retract landing gear, it uses 5" main wheel.. If any one outhere has ever built one of these or any Art Johnson plan please let me know, whould be of great help if i go along the build it or NOT.

Sounds like a good plane for a strong 40cc-60cc gasser or glow equivelent. The P-40 has a nice big chin so hiding a gas engine should be easy. It would also be an easy job hiding a Moki 2.10 or MDS2.18 glow engine. My.02

Believe it or not Art's prototype flew on a .90 two stroker! I think the 1.8 or 2.1 Moki would be a great choice or, even better, a good 2.5-3.5 cu/in gas burner. Good luck finding a canopy and cowl for this bird. Jerry Bates offers a set of P-40 B/C plans that are about 82 inches. Maybe his accessories would work for it? As for gear take a look at those offered by Yellow Aircraft for their new P-40 kit. Also, Sierra Precision is rumoured to have a set of rotaters for this size airplane. To build it with fixed gear would be a crime, IMHO. Also, you will definitely want to put the flaps on it. The P-40 is not known for its kind and gentle nature at low speeds. Good luck with it, Chad Veich.
