How do I measure the head speed of my Raptor 30? (Think cheap, very
cheap)

Thanks.

Borrow tacho and tape to fuz. Read whilst on ground.
Borrow distant reading tacho and read whilst flying.
Fit governor.

Get a paper disk with a slot cut in it to spin at 1200 rpm. When the heli
blades appear stationary when viewed through the spinning disk, the blades
are clocking 1200 RPM. Vary paper disk RPM to desired target RPM.

Fit ultra cheap cycle speedo (wireless) and you have everything you need -
well it needs a little maths to work out the speed in RPM, but actually it's
not that difficult.

Ok..i understand the theory, how exactly do you spin a paper disc at 1200 rpm
on the flying field?

I'm intrigued....

If you can build a freakin heli, you sure as hell should be able to build a
spinning disk.

surely you will need a tacho to make the disk rotate at 1200 RPM! why not
use this on the heli.

You will need a friend with a stop watch to help you do this..but think this
is probably the cheapest method!

1. Tape some highly visible tape on one rotor blade.
2. Get the blades up to speed.
3. Start blinking your eyes as quickly as possible!
4. When the blade with the tape looks as though it is stationary, start the
stop watch! Time for one minute...

.......and the amount of times you blink your eyes is the rpm of the
rotors!!!

.... Simple yet effective!

..........remember to stop blinking afterwards!

.............Well you did ask for the the cheapest method....and you don't
even need a paper disc!

I need to build a rev counter capable of reading the revs on a piece of
spinning paper. Any ideas?

People keep cracking jokes that my spinning disk idea still needs a method
of counting revs, but there are many motors that spin specific revs: Isn't
there a 'dremel' motor that's controlled with a digital RPM control? And ALL
stepper motors work at very specific RPMs specified by the
stepper-controller.

I never expected people to use freaking hairdryer motors or something like
that - although it would still be easy to do with a debounced switch
circuit, a commuter arm, and a 99 cent digital counter chip...

I think I'd use a commutator arm. Less ravelling then :-)
