I would just like to hear from fellow modelers that have had experience with this motor, good or bad. I am planning to build a scale model using it as a powerplant.
Thanks in advance.

Me too! I'm particularly interested in the AUW of the planes they're in or some thrust measurements @ X RPM.

Thanks!

Dave,

I like my Ryobi's...I used a pair of them in my B-25 and they ran absolutely perfect. I have a couple more of them already to use in future projects. They run smooth, cost very little, and have the muffler and carb in-line with the crankcase. Very nice for many scale projects.
Mine are stock with stock mags. No hop ups at all and they turn a 16-8 at 7000 rpm. I have no static thrust numbers. Naturally, like most smaller gasoline engines they are heavy compared to glow. Not the best airobatic engine but fantastic for a lot of scale projects that will be flown in a scale manner.
Here is my use....

Thanks for the advice Randy! I saw your B-25 on the RC Warbirds sight and it looked great! Is it back in the air yet?

Sorry to say...no. I got a lot of the repairs done and then somehow a few smaller airplane projects got on the table ahead of it. It sets on a big table right beside my building table so it get attention every once in a while.
I'd love to get it finished up but as most modelers...too many planes, too little time.
The engines run fantastic on it and thats what prompted me to jump in on this thread.
More power could be easily tweaked from my Ryobi's but I didn't need more for the B-25 so I left them stock so they would sync well....and they do.

Sounds great! Did you Laser cut the parts for the B-25 yourself? I have been considering doing a kit (Scale of course) but the Laser shop near me wants an arm and a leg to go from my plan file to his laser. Laser time is cheap in comparison.
Any suggestions for good subject (WW2) for the Ryobi? I was considering a prototype Hurricane , which has lots of fabric covering and could be built with a decent wing loading.

All my airplanes have been cut on the old jig saw. Someday I will step up and spend for laser work I rekon. I spent an entire winter cutting out my B-17. I would cut a couple or ribs or bulkheads out of the plans ( 4 huge sheets ) and copy them at work on a standard copy machine, glue the copies to the wood and cut them out in the evening...next day same thing... by spring I had most all of it cut out of a $2 piece of damaged paneling from the local lumber yard. A bit slow but what the heck..it's a hobby!
Myself, I want a forward observation airplane from WWll ( like a 1/4 scale Cub ) This would be great for the Ryobi, the Storch would be excellent and be more exotic to have. My want list is HUGE!!! :)

Randy.
I also saw your B-25 Impresive. enough to make me want to build one.
I've been all over the place with my models from parkflyers to giant scale. It's time to get focused. and pick a direction.
How do you figure a pair of Ryboi's would do in a "Ziroli DC-3".

Rick, I think you need more than the Ryobi's on the enlarged ( 118" ) B-25 or the Ziroli DC-3.
I have a friend that flys one of the DC-3's... he has many, many flights on it. It flys on Quarda 42's and I wouldn't want much less. Built light it would run on G-38's but the 45's would probably be better.
I don't know about picking a direction.. I never know where I am headed!! This past was as bad as ever for wandering around in my shop....

Direction.
Yah I know what you mean.
1/3 Spacewalker with a Qudra 52.
1/4 Morresy Bravo Zenoah G-38.
My Satio 72 & 120 need homes.
Hopefully a Funtana S and a Cloud Dancer
Got a GWS beaver.
Just ordered a "Tantrum" from Mountain Models (parkflyer)
Gotta glue the fin back on the "Magic"
And I really want to start my Ziroli F4U I've been able to get the landing gear.
And any twin would be very cool.
Obviously I don't have any either.

I love my little Ryobi....if a picture is worth a thousand words then the video must be priceless....
I'm running a Bambula 18x8 around 7500-7600 rpms

Hi Herb:
Interesting project to say the least! Nice job on the design and the construction pictures. I can't wait to get my hands on a Ryobi , then get started on a project. I won an auction on Ebay a couple of weeks
ago for a used (but in great shape) 31cc , but the idiot shipped it to me with gas in it and of course Canada Customs disposed of it!
Now I'm out $52.00 US and the guy won't replace it or refund my
money. My first "Sting" on Ebay.:(
I will start looking for another one after Christmas is over.

Keep 'em flyin' Herb!

Is there no way to get it. from Customs: you know, like a mile of paper work or some thing. The one that burned me about a year ago was getting a warranty replacement kit and having to pay the "duties" all over again.

HERB
:D :D I LIKE IT :D :D
I've got a 1/3 Spacewalker (sig kit) with a Quadra 52 that I've flown with a friends help. I'm just a little nervous about flying it by myself. I've ben flying 40 size for a while now and been playing with parkflyers for just over a year now.
But this is more like it:)
checking out the constrution pic's now

Herb.
I'm hoping that you'll post here again.
With a little bit of "Big-Pink" info:
I've got a couple of questions:
I clicked on links, going all over the place and now I can't seem to find the info.

From you constrution pic's:
The wing airfoil looks like it just has straight cuts and a flat bottom.
How far back from the leading edge did you make the cut, and then how thick is it right at the leading edge. Same question re: trailing edge?
Yard sticks? Where are they all, I see one for the horz stab spar a couple in the wing, can't figure out where they all are?
Looks like the ailerons are sheeted?

Rick,
Good questions,
The wing leading edge is 1/2 round trim from Home Depot...WAY OVERKILL...but it works...so about 1/2-5/8 inch thick. The airfoil is STRAIGHT-CUT back to about 3.5-4 inches (don't have my ruler handy)...the trailing edge is 8 inches. My ailerons are sheeted on one side only....was just testing how it would work...seems to do well...but you could sheet both sides if you trimmed down the foam a bit...to match the trailing edge thickness.

The wing has 8 yardsticks all overlapped and laminated together for the spar...then a single 9th one laying flat over the center section that my wing hold-down bolts run through....I won't be doing that again....it's strong...but a lot of work...

It seems Big Pink is reallly gaining popularity (you should see how many emails I still have to answer)..heheh.

I'm waiting for RC Groups to set up my web page space, then I will build a comprehensive page on Big Pink ....and ALL my other designs as well...FINALLY get ONE place to go for all my crazy-ness...heheh...even my own domain pointed to it...(take a guess as to the domain name..heheh)

On a second note...I have REVISED Big Pink TWO times so far...
I have a fully symetrical (Hot Pink) based off the "Hots" design, and JUST TODAY touched up the old Big Pink drawing for a NEW, leaner, meaner.. Big Pink Trainer.

Here's a link to the page that has the large format .jpg. If you would like another format please shoot me an e-mail and I'll see what I can do.
http://home.comcast.net/~crazyherb-rc/bigpink.htm

I believe the Big Pink Trainer is the answer to many modelers who want to get into larger aircraft with out the high cost, or time investment in "kit" building...

It's simple, fun, fast to build, and great performance...yes ...even with the "straight-cut" airfoil..... The original Big Pink flies HANDS OFF inverted.......

I have a new video as well...looking for a place to post my 16 meg 6 minute version (Smoke and all) just to show everyone how awesome this plane flies. There's a teaser of it here:
http://www.rcsites.net/crazyherb-rc/

Best of luck! E-mail or post here if you have questions...TAKE PICS!!

Herb:
I agree with you about "Big Pink Trainer" As I said I've got a Spacewalker That I would really like to start flying a lot more than I am, I did get out with it a couple of times, with a local guy who's got a lot of giant scale. I've gotten some stick time on it, even landed it once. But I'm still a little bit nervous, about taking it out myself.
I've been playing with parkflyers this last year, and Without spending big bucks on brushless motors and ESC's the peformance just isn't there. I am going to set up one parkflyer with a brushless motor, and LiPoly batt's for those (I've got 1 hr before I need to get the kids, just a real quick flight at the park around the corner) spur of the moment need a flying fix.
After seeing your big pink, I'm going to rethink what I'm doing I was considering pulling the 1/2A stuff out.
Bud Morrison has got me thinking about it doing one of the Fan-Fold (http://www.foamyfactory.com/airplanes.htm) airplanes that Tim H has drawn up, and sticking a Norvel 0.061 on it. Now I'm thinking make it bigger pink style.
I gotta stop switching gears between large and small airplanes.

AND I GOTTA get a camera.

Dear Airnut2
I have one of these engines in my Mick Reeves 74 inch Spitfire.
It is never going to produce masses of power. At the moment
it is running on a 20/1 petrol/oil mix. But this will go to 50/1
after the first gallon of fuel. Hopefully I will get some more power
then. It so far has proved reliable, it has to be started with an
electric starter as there is not enough compression to flick start it.
And obviously it is a lot cheaper to run than a glow engine.
So to sum it up if you are looking for reliability, but not with masses of power but cheap to run this engine would be ideal
for you. hope this is of some help to you.
Regards Phil Goff.

I have four Ryobi's, from weed whackers. All were purchased from Harbor Freight, (factory reconditioned) for $49.00. Removed the engines, threw weed whacker away. Only modifications were to cut flywheel down slightly. Not necessary though. Also inserted two pins in front of flywheel to prevent prop from spinning. One is in quarter scale (Nosen) Aeronica. Will do loops, rolls, and very nice slooow flybys. One in quarter scale Scratch built Hanriot HD1, 17 lbs. Flys very scale like, but no barn burner. In my opinion, you can not beat them for the price!

I have an old ryobi weed whacker 31cc, where can I get more info on how to convert it to RC?

If you already have the weedwacker:
do a search on Goggle type in
"Teaching a weedwacker to fly"
should get you to a page that has a couple of articles and links to help out. Oh and also look for "Jag Engines" they make mufflers and prop adaptors.
I looked into it a while ago Jag has a convertion kit for something like $100.00 includes muffler prop adaptor. works out to be a pretty cheap engine, as long as you already have the weedwacker. I worked it out, buying a new weedwacker, and buying the kit. I'm in Canada, and the best price that I've found is about $120.00 Cdn$$ for the weedwacker.,then add about $100.00 US$$ for a prop adaptor. Factor in the machine shop cost?.and it was almost the same cost as a new Zenoah G-26.
South of the boarder you guy's have Harbor Freight, that really cuts the cost, makes it worth while. and you get to skip the boarder taxes.
But if you already have the weedwacker. go for it.
Rick
