Ok pals and gals:
I have recently aquired a Gilmore RED LION that has been crashed into the ground at a very high velocity, thus, smashing the plane to many small bits....
I have been hired to "repair" this plane for a friend, and i think it's gunna be quite the project.
So i am counting on all of my friends and brothers out there in RC-web land to help me cause I know you all love a good challenge!
First off, if anyone has built one, seen one or has plans to scan and send me, or sell me cheap, this would be a great start.....
lets see all the serious old-time scratchbuilders come out of the woodwork for me on this one!

Is the picture the plane that crashed? Wow! I think Hostetler and Byron (now Iron Bay) both had plans for this Wedell-Williams racer. Do you have no ideas about your plane's origins? What was the covering, wingspan, weight, engine?

Did you get that picture from Hostetler's site? Have you tried posting at this forum: http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/default.asp ?

Can't help much on the repairs, but I would like to know what the model is and where can I get a set of plans or kit ?

You can find the plans here, Mud: Wendell Hostetler's Plans (http://www.aero-sports.com/whplans/)
Just scroll down to where it says: Wedell-Williams Gilmore "Red Lion" :)

oh my.....i care indeed, as this is my favorite era of aviation. Wasn't there one painted as "Miss New Orleans"? Williams Brothers has a plastic model i believe. Oh the Golden Age....who wouldn't fall in love with such beauty. Dumas just released a 24" inch freeflight of this plane i think.....someone correct me if i'm wrong. Yours is BIG, so i want one about 400/480 size/32"-36" wingspan. Just think of all the 20's style racers that could be done in this size and lazercut. For ya vendors out there i would buy them ALL....hehe
You have a treasure on your hands, good luck with the repairs, ie. thin superglue for the stab and recover....cowl looks hardest-cut plastic pieces for major gaps/fiberglass/fill/sand/paint...ya know the routine.
Just wish i could be there to help and good luck!

If that was built from Hostetler plans a new cowl is available.

I called the people that supp. supply cowls and glassfibre parts for them, the guy was a total jerk and wasnt very nice at all.
I guess I will have to make one or find one elsewhere......
Thanx!

That looks like a wedell williams racer if i'm not mistaken there were a few of those flying in races in the 30's so it's not a total one of type plane. It looks to be pretty good size I'm sure Cleveland has plans although expensive they are nice plans. Here's the link to it

Or to the online catalog anyway and it is the Gilmore red lion.
Dumas makes a small one
I hope this helps I really love the radial engined race planes.

i hope you didnt give up--kurt from aerodrome r/c has released a beautiful kit of this plane in the workshop area, its the pre release kit but the plans are wonderful, and will give you a lot of info..all the laser cut parts are very nice,,i have it myself and have already started it..
look up patterson LA and they have a museum there too..theres a model 44 named after the gun in case university museum in cleveland..its roscoe turners old plane...still there for you to see..roscoe himself is buried in indianapolis at crown hill cemetary died in 1970 of cancer..
having said that--i wonder if you dont have better templates right there in your hands with the crashed plane..
the bengston wedell williams is about a 52 inch wing span, whats that one?
it looks very rebuildable to me!!
best regards

Hi Richard, Good luck with your Red Lion.
I recently purchased a Travel Air Mystery Ship 1/5 scale kit on Ebay from a guy who is an airline pilot and kits this airplane.
The kit is absolutely superb!!!
Epoxy glass fuse, cowl, wheel pants, excellent plans and construction manual.
It was about $275 but worth every penny!
Will easily convert to electric.
There's a writeup on it over on the EZone forums.
Best of luck!
I love the old racing planes!!!
It's been a few years, but I met Norma Granville of the Granville family of Gee Bee Racers at the Oshkosh Air Show.
What a great 2 hour conversation I enjoyed with her!!!
Her first job was sweeping the hangar floor and helping as needed as the first Gee Bees were built.
She is wealth of knowledge on these old airplanes!!!
