What is the best way to learn about electronics? Can somebody point to a website or suggest a good book?

Start with basic electricity. See:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0471850853/002-7616654-3252000?v=glance

Where to go from there depends on the purpose of your reading. What do you want to be able to do with the knowledge you gain?

I recently discovered this site which gives a good introduction to circuits and electronics:

http://www.play-hookey.com/

Good place to start is:

When I didn't want to worry about returning library books on the subject because of future projects
and dabblings, i went to Radio Shack and picked up a couple of their glossy cover books.

Lots of basic projects and some exercises.

I figured I'd end up going back to them for components and such eventually,sooo...

The public library is a great place to start if you're in a city where the library is large enough to support a good technical section.
